The poncho line are the TROPIC.
if the kangol brand is a bit too expensive, you can get cheapy for about $15-20.

i see i aint the only one with different color kangols.

by the way, the Kool thing about the kangols is that you can wear them backwards forward or on the side and still look like your pimping. LOL
we also call them boina. (spanish)

I don't know who started it, but, I've always seen that those involved in the Latin percussion community tend to wear it, and call me old fashioned (although I'm 28), but I find a very Latin-American identity to those hats. I guess I view it as a dressing style that clearly marks me both as a Latino and as a percussionist.

I personally have 5 Kangols, black, white, grey, cream, and blue. :) Perfect for all wardrobes! :D

Yesterday I went to a fantastic concert by Sierra Maestra who amazingly visited my city as part of their tour. So I caught conguero on my mobile phone. Notice how he too is wearing a kangol!
The other topic here was smiling:) He's not a smiler, isn't he, but as soon as he saw me taking picture, he smiled though! He was also playing bongo and bell sometimes, and did it all very well. Unfortunately I could not decipher his name as all the band members were introduced (that cuban accent I guess).

Hey, Sierra Maestra are awesome!! I had the chance to see them a couple of years ago, but with the more traditional son line-up (no conguero). But sorry, I son´t know who the guy is you photographed.,
Anyway, what did they play? THe Tibiri Tibara programme or just a bunch of different things?

For about half of the songs this guy switched to bongos and there was another percussionist who would either take over congas or continue play woodblock and bells (there were no actual timbales though).

They played material from Rumbero Soy (la caminadora, llora como yo llore), viaje a la semilla (ensalada de congas orientales), tibiri tabara (felipe blanco), some classics (dile a catalina) and some songs I did not recognise. Oddly, I think there were no tunes from the latest disc Son, soul of the nation.

They were not promoted as much as Eliades Ochoa two years earlier, or because there was no reference to Buena Vista Social Club in the ads, so surprisingly for group of such level, the venue was only half full.
This turned out great for those who came, however, as people had room to actually dance this great music!

Hello everybody!
I love Kangol hats! I have a collection of Kangols from diferent cities of the world :-)
I mean the cities I've been to, not so many...
London, Paris, Roma, Moscow...
And I got one from my Saint Petersburg just a week ago at last!
So, if it is a tradicion or rumbero identification, I like it! I've never put anything on my head before I started to play congas:-) But I had a smoll beard under my lip then I played bebop on my trumpet, like Dizzy Gillespie did:-)
They are greats, and build a style and fashion...
So, let it be!

Saludos Hermanos

Here is another little treat for congueros that wear kangols.
looks like Gon Bops also knows that there is a trend in the conga industry and now have their own Gop Bops
kangol hat.

Hey I like those Bauer "Lite" drums. Look good.
But sorry man the hat makes you look like a farmer! :p

Does LP make a "Classic Lite" model?
