Hi Congaplace,

Hope all is well! I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed a small discrepancy on the "Tres golpes" part notated for Guaguancó Matanzas style recently posted on this site?

The basic ride part I know for Guaguancó Matancero is pattern #1 in the attached GIF.

Saludos,

Jorge Ginorio

Jorge,, have you done A and C from the chart yet??
Not something you'd want to do very often during a song..
But, they're pretty flashy variations..
I'm working to get them consistant whenever I try them. (not there yet :p )

The baby steps I'm taking are to do the double on the 2, and come around to the next measure and try to get the 3 again since that's your "home" on the Tres Gulpes.

Then, do the double on the 2, then the 3..
Then, get the 2, 3, 4, and 1,, then skip back to the 3.

Gotta have a steady Tumba though.

What's the "Madruga" at the bottom of that chart? How does that function?

Madruga or Maruga is a metal shaker .

Hi Laurent and Windhorse,

Glad to know you guys noticed too. Maybe we can get Congaman to correct it?

Laurent, keep me posted on the availability of your up coming book.

Windhorse, I have not tried those patterns. It's been a while since I did get the chance to play some rumba.

Keep doing what your doing, the thing is to get them internalized so they become part of your rhythm vocabulary instead of playing just patterns or variations, you know what I mean?

Best,

Jorge Ginorio

To what are you referring?

Hi Windhorse,

I'm referring to the transcription recently posted on the "Congabook" of this site. Also, their is a direct link to it at the CongaPlace home page.

Best,

Jorge Ginorio

Oh, jeeze!! I just looked at that! And they're showing something moving around the one, and if that first quarter note after the slap is a bass, and the next is a slap and two tones,, then it sure looks like the "Havana" style we learned,, but all the slaps after it are a bit different..

Also, checked out the Salidor, and it's the Havana style with the palm-touches all the way through. The Matanzas material we learned leaves more space between the notes without the touches.

Of course, saying that anything is "the" way people do it somewhere is just wrong,, since everybody who plays has at least a tiny variation if not on the main pattern, then at least in handing.
