Here is a clip from a gig I done on Sat night with a newly formed 13 piece project. Sound wasnt the best, entire backline was supplied, I took along my Cuban requinto though.
On stage sound was shocking for the first few tracks, couldnt hear any timbal/kit, bass or piano! :shock:

Sound improved after this track.
Audio aint the best, only shot with a small digital cam.
Myself on congas, my bro Tonio on kit/timbal and Rodolfo 'El Panga' Hechavarria on quinto/bata/guiro.'
Not bad for 4 rehearsals, this was our 3rd gig...

Pedrito Martinez. Wow, I am suitably impressed...but as a new guy I am not familiar with this player.

Yes, Pedro Martinez is one of the best, an outstanding conga and bata player, very creative, hard working, humble, with deep knowledge of AfroCuban music, an amazing sense of timing, and he just loves to play. I have had the privilege of playing with him when he came and sat in with our rumba group for a couple of sets over the last few months. He is as good or better singer than he is a conga player, and he seems to be able to play any drum part while he sings lead on any kind of song. Everyone in the group sings and plays better when he is playing with us, he has a way of making the music that much better. Awesome musician.

Pedro just blows my mind man :shock:

I think he is the best player out there at present , and his voice is just unreal , could listen to him sing all night . His rumba album with Roman diaz is fantastic . The points in which the kit player joins in on the solo are " crazy " :oops:

Will have to watch that a few times to get my head around it !

No to take a thing away from Pedrito(which u cant anyway) but my favorite Conga drummer today is Eliel Lazo-Linares...here he is in Cuba giving a clinic...he is just tooooooooooo smooooooooooooth and u can hear every single stroke!...

A link to the (3) cats whole performance. In some of them numbers Gio sounds like (2) or (3) congaplayers.
Michel Camilo, Anthony Jackson and Giovanni Hidalgo are at the height of their powers during this performance
for the ages. Gio demonstrates how to use shakers, chimes etc in a very subtle way. Enjoy!

Sammy Davis Jr. and JUAN MENDOZA on bongos (who kicks ASS!) for 6 minutes playing a high speed 'martillo' this is how it's done when backing up someone...dynamics....pacing....know when to riff/floreo....I finally found out thru this video that this was Juan Mendoza who was the percussionist in Vegas for the ( "Rat Pack' Sinatra-Sammy-Dean-Joey-Peter) in their DVD The Rat Pack from the 60's...

OMG! My hands are hurting just thinking about a martillo at that speed.....And Sammy.... unreal! You're right. Can't think of any of today's so-called singers who could pull off a medley this long, this artfully with only one percussive instrument as accompaniment. Thanks for this great post.
