LP Patatos or Remo Palmilla

I'm in between the Patato LP or the Remo Palmilla. I really like the Poncho Sanchez but I'm afraid I'll get over those flashy colors soon.

got me a used Galaxy Giovanni quito and tumba for 600 on craigslist

I'm always very skeptical about the quality of remo's stuff. Everything from the finish coming off of their drumheads prematurely to their congaheads bubbling and coming apart. To crooked brackets and cheap tuning rods on their djembes and the not so good workmanship on the remo kanjira that I own. There are 4 tuning screws and only 3 of them actually tune. The seams of the wood are very visible.

Have any of you had the same experience with remo products? Are their congas well made or would I experience the same stuff? Seems I've had not so good luck with remo products.

I've found LP and meinl's stuff to be awesome quality and workmanship. Very consistant.

Mr Hands I agree with you about Remo's quality not being as consistent as LP.
I just ordered both of Remo's Kanjiras and they should arrive tomorrow.
Should I be worried?

I don't think you should be worried. Maybe I've just had bad luck with remo products. The remo traditional kanjira that I have still sounds really good. The woodwork is not great. And then there's also that one tuning mechanism that doesn't seem to do any tuning..but it doesn't seem to matter as the sound is still there. Also it can be a pain in the ass to tune because the key is small and so are the holes. All these things you'll eventually get used to. After you tune it well once, you'll barely ever have to adjust anything. But who knows, yours may be perfectly fine.
I guess my biggest gripe is that for the amount I payed for it and the simplicity of the drum, I was expecting much better quality. Had I known what I was getting, I would have went with the Meinl Kanjira or the John Bergamo which are both a little over half the price. Meinl's stuff is very consistant but I didn't want the hassle of constant tuning due to them using goat skin instead of synthetic head.

I should put a video up soon featuring this instrument. But by that time you'll already have yours.

Have you heard the saying you get what you pay for. Remo make 4 conga models the Palmilla model compair it to a Matador cheaper hard ware than the other LP model . Then you have the Salsa Deco very much the same other than Color design and skin the put on this drum a bit better .

Then you have there 2 exclusive artist models Jimmy Morales and Poncho Sanchez those are made of top quality material's have inner reinforcement all the goody's.

I wouldn't consider the Palmilla cheaper like the matador is to LP. Guitar Center website lists them at over $600 per drum. I'd expect better quality than matador for that price. I also just noticed on Remo's website that they cut down alot of their options as far as conga sizes and finishes. They only produce 11.75 and 12.50 size drums for both Morales and Sanchez exclusive models according to their model numbers list. They used to have quinto and supertumba. You think it's the economy?

This is absolutely true. I have owned a few REMOS in the resent past, Tuff e Nuff series, and can certainly vouch for the quality of the hardware, second to none. in fact Volcano uses it on their congas.
The only draw back is that they weigh a ton.
