I just got my second (possibly third or forth!) hand LP Galaxy congas. The 2 tumbas and the conga sound good but there are some serious overtones on the quinto.
The side plates have M Cohen printed on them which I guess dates them from pre 2000 right?
I think all of them still have the original skins on them and they have been played alot by the look of them. Do you think a new cow skin on the quinto would sort out the ovetones? I've heard that the LP original skins are often poor anyway so I guess if they have been played for 10 years or more they're not going to sound great.
Also, the requinto skin is paper thin and see through. Doesn't appear to have been played much but there's not much tone to it so I guess that will need replacing as well.
Will I be ok with a couple of new skins do you think?
They're actually the wood ones (Gio series). The open tone on the quinto is so ringy and metalic sounding that I'm just worried it's a problem with the drum itself. I guess I'll just have to change the skin and hope for the best!
