Saludos, just saw two Gonbops Alex Acuña Bongos on ebay ,they want over $300. Look like the same 1/4" thin weak lugs which do not hold under tension are still use by that company. Don't that company have some pro musicians endorsed who can tell them about that flaw ? One last thing, they do not answer e-mails.

It's is not the lugs that are bad nor the bongos those drums are made to use plastic heads so the lugs do not need that much tension. I have a set of the California series made back in 1999 before the Alex Acuna model in black with cow hides and they hold up very well . If you put thick heads lugs will bend due to there design . Put thinner heads and lugs do not bend and do not crank it up so much, A bongo does not need to be so cranked up to tune proper .I have broken more skins on this bongos than lugs . The only thing I agree with you they do not answer emails nor honor there Guaranty.viewtopic.php?f=36&t=6313&start=0 Gon bops is a lot of talk when it come to repairing a problem.

Leedy, so, what about their California Series ? Are they also made for plastic heads ? They come with horse hide. Yambu owns 1 and have to change the lugs because of the same problem. They simply do not hold under tension. Gonbops just have to stop been cheap, use thicker & better metal to made their lugs. I was using a 1cent thick skin on that Bongó. Next month aftert I finish sanding & doing a paint job, then a new set of lugs (V251 Lp valje type ) will be install so i can obtain the desire pitch. more to follow.

leedy, there is no problem with the rims, just the lugs and I do not use thick skins on machos. On hembras yes, I do not like the sound produce by thin skins . As for plastic skins I only use them as a back up in case the macho skin brakes. hasta la vista. Mule skins do not exist down here just cows.
