Didn't play too much latin in the Underground, but yes Latin is very popular in London, there is a good sized Latino community to play for and some great Latino Musos to learn from.

Did you recently get the Zebra's? I saw a pair not too long ago on ebay. I wanted to buy them but I didn't have enough capital to splurge with. They undoubtedly look exotic. On my spring break trip to New York I saw quite a few acts in the subway. I didn't see or hear any Latin music but I enjoyed the acts. 3 ply? I struggled with one sheet, I can't imagine trying to work three sheets simultaneously. I wonder how that sounds!

Dice,

Is Latin music popular in London?

Yes, on Ebay... but I think it's been a year, year and a half, but not more that two years ago that I got them.
They were/are in mint condition, previously owned by someone who just stored them away and never used them after he bought them in '69 or '70.
The guy who I bought them from is from N.J., he buys things at estate sales after people die... then sell's what he buys on Ebay.
Personally I'm not a big fan of anything by Lp even though I've owned a few pairs many years ago, but I really wanted to have a pair of Zebra wood bongoes.
Dario owns a really early pair/model of Lp Zeeb's without the typical "thick" bottom ring, his have a more traditional thinner Cuban style bottom ring.
Yes, this type of wood is in the family of "exotic" woods.

Sonerito, suena tu bongo'!

Gracias mi hermano respetado, no it was the Herald Square station, 34th street (below Macy's department store),
Harrys Record store was (the new one still is) in the Times Square 42nd street station.
"Record Mart".

Psych1, I'm ready to move to another country myself, I live in Manhattan, been back 25 years and can't stand it anymore.
I'd love to check out Istanbul... but I'm planning to go to India, very big studio music recording scene in Mumbai (Bombay),
for films, and pop music. I have a friend who moved there... got into the lucrative studio recording scene and lives like a king.
Plus I'm really loco for Indian Women.

Markito very nice martillo, nice playing, i like how loud that bongo got without a mike, sometimes i play with people playing electric guitar, and only bearly can hear the bongo if you pay attention to the music when we record.

Can anyone tell us how to mount x ray film, do u soak them in water like a cuero or what?

No you can't soak them... they are basically like plastic, so they don't absorb anything.
About six months ago, I sent 'Emedin Rivera' an email and asked him "what"s the secret to mounting them?", he told me you need extra long "starter lugs" in order to
be able to pull that stuff down once you painstakingly get it "tucked".

I wonder how they make the film soft.
To tuck it under the wire rim.

Does anybody know the prices on extra hoop flesh rims for bongosor congas from Cali-JCR, who else sells those?

Let me say those things (X-Ray on a Macho) are frigg'in loud! A player can get a sound like a gun shot or a firecracker going off.
But honestly... they always have that "plastic" non organic sound that's missing when a real animal skin is played.
I used them in the subway because the Macho was loud, and I was up against the guitarist and bassist who used Amps.
Plus, in the hot humid weather... it was MURDER down in the subway, tune up once and it stayed "up".

It's pliable enough to get it/feed it around the flesh hoop and under the crown/top ring.
But not at all as simple as mounting a wet animal skin.
Cali made me a few hoops for either $7.00 or $8.00 each if I remember correctly this past winter.

I have a set of Lp mahogany imitations with x-ray on for those extra humid days here in Florida. The way i tucked mine i used tape to hold down the film then extra large lugs to pull down. Also use gloves as it will cut you as in paper cuts , but wider.
Peace

Here are photos of my LP Zebra, circa 1967. Original LP Cuban bottoms. I had X ray on an LP macho that I owned years ago and it sounded awesome. The late Manny Oquendo used X ray on an LP macho he had as well.

Sí, those... beautiful, I prefer those more traditional bottom rings.
Even though the Lp "thick" ones are indestructible.

Nice Dar.

Mark,
I used to also see the "Emrays" X-Ray macho heads that came on the LP Matadors sold at Manny's in NYC.
They seemed to be two layers of dark blue film.
I recall seeing you in the subway once long ago, before we met.

Around that time, I saw Manny Oquendo playing these bongos with an X-Ray macho.
So I wanted to try it myself, using some taller lug nuts from JCR also.
It was hard to get the skin to wrap around the ring, so I warmed up the film
in the oven for about 2 minutes, which softens them up a bit, and then you have to work
fast before it cools downs again and gets hard and brittle.

I only used this on a Matador I specifically played with a loud electric band for about 2 years.
Nothing beats real skins, but I have some Remo headed bongos for damper weather.

Greetings Isaac, long time no see... obviously you've moved to Canada, do you miss 23rd st.? I bet not.
Thanks for the tip about warming them up in the oven.. that makes a lot sense because I recall how the ones Emedin R. used to sell had the tucked edge looking
very "compressed". I'm going to try 3 ply (layers), I have a feeling the thinner the ply, the more ring/plastic sound it may have.
I'll experiment, if it turns out bad, I still have plenty more to try another with.
Thanks for the tip/s!

All the best to you up in CA.
