A pair of fine instruments heading my way soon.

Postby salcero1 » Thu Jan 13, 2011 3:03 am

These two sets of bongos posted from a previous thead on this forum will be heading my way Mid 2011. Although I would have loved to purchase a new solid hardwood body set it seems tough to locate one nowadays unless a proper connection has been established with the right Artisan. Stave bongos crafted meticulously, correctly and with proper care will last long enough to hand down to family members or if the price is handsome enough a sellable item way down the road. The two attachments are of a Bloodwood Valje set from Mr.Ralph Flores at Resoulution Drums with calf skin heads (not the bleached heads you see in the photo) and the second will be an SOS black walnut set from Mr. Jay Bereck. Both very reputable, very polite and fine gentlemen. Long live their craftsmanship and beautiful works. P.S. Two views of my other fine instrument I own: the John"Dandy"Rodriguez Legends Series Bongo from LP.

Congratulations, very fine bongos. I also have a bongo made by Jay and one by Ralph, in different woods than yours. And I also have a Valje. All of them are very very excellent drums.

Salcero,

I see you are in New York. Have you considered JCR? I recently purchased a sweet set of JCR Solid Mahogony Shell Bongos at his shop on Ogden in the Bronx. I also was able to hand pick 3 bells. These bells are like cymbals and everyone is a little different so it was like being in a candy store.

Cally has excellent stuff in his little shop. It was well worth the effort. The shop is full of surprizes too.

Jerry, How long ago did you stop by his shop because I've been there & done that but I had quality issues with him last month. My set was cracked and repaired from jump. It will be a long while 'til I revisit his place of business. He may have produced some beautiful works in the past but present day with what I've experienced I would just window shop, so to speak, up there in the Bronx.

The Moperc dejembe shells on the top right was the inspiration for the paint job done on the Tropical series set.

Senor Leedy,
Ever since I had that bad encounter w/JCR in the Bronx I always wanted to get a quality instrument without the hassle of getting duped in the transaction. Never will I ever buy from that man ever again in my lifetime. You do know your drums well for I have inquired at several different places that make sound and top quality instruments and yes they are not cheap to purchase being brand new or for that matter from a person who had purchased a drum set from a well known reputable artisan and is selling the set for damn near the $500 price tag you mentioned. The only drums that were mass produced that I have in my inventory is the LP Valjes which are extremely light and fun to play and the LP "Dandy" model which my set is equipped with L&H drumheads bringing the tone to a beautiful old school sound. I'm not a big fan of stock drumheads. It is very true that quality shell characteristics resonates the sound from the skins so care and attention to detail along with type of skin must be given to the selection process of a quality drumhead. In addition the experience and style of a player makes a world of a difference because one can own a quality instrument but if you can't make it sing properly and beautifully why bother to purchase unless you just want to be a collector of such instruments? If that's your bag more power to you. My sets will not collect dust they will be played with pleasure and often. I'm very satisfied with my purchases to date, some were pricey but to me worth every penny. Thank you for your input Senor Leedy-Hasta la proxima. Adios y con Paz-Jorge

Salcero1. That is a beautiful Moperc Bongó and gorgeous color indeed. You'll see an excellent top quality instrument out of the box. Here is mine from the early 2000s. Color have change from the aging process.
