I believe on a forum where so many members native language is not English, and for those who are native English language speakers but not trained writers, we should not be critical here of writing, language, or spelling errors. It is however fair to evaluate someone here based upon the quality of their ideas, their knowledge of and proficiencies in music, their knowledge of instruments, their respect for tradition, and their respect for those who know so much more than they do. IMO it is in these areas where some of our newer member fall short. When someone talks about "natural talent" , shows ignorance and lack of respect for a belief system and culture other then their own, and yet can't help repeating that their principal venue for music is church, perhaps there are other areas to question.

psych1, not sure if i caught all of that, but my statement is, how can u compare some bongoceros here in the US or in Europe (and im not saying that Race, skin color or religion has anything to do with it), to the musicians born in the carribean where the music originally came from.leedy makes a good point about the bongosero from Japan trying to imitate the Cuban bongosero, sure their can be musicians here & there that are good because they practice & have a desire to learn & get better, but to the actual carribean musicians that carry the Music & rythms in their blood, theres a difference/its another level..
it would be like comparing mr.jack constanzo to giovanni hidalgo

You keep referring to the Carribean ? Are you saying that a bongocero from Jamaica or haiti would be inherently better than one from france for example ?

I mentioned all those great cuban percussionists because after all the bongo is a cuban instrument is it not ? Adopted by other latin nations like the ones you mentioned , in a similar fashion to the way its been adopted and introduced into the mainstream all over the wrold .

The best bongocero for the last 3 decades was not born in the Caribbean, he was born in the Big Apple, NYC. His name is John Dandy Rodriguez. Llevate esa papa'!

When I first read this question I thought it was a bullshit question to be frank. Its a matter of opinion and not of fact, it is a subjective question open to one's own particular taste, someone in the tread mentioned a bunch of Cubano congeros but not known for bongo. Then all you guys jump in paying creadence to bullshit, but speaking of NYC bongo players how about Chucky Lopez, Jose Mangual Sr. and Jr., and formally of NYC and playing bongos the majority of shows I saw with Tipica was not Dandy but Orestes (Cuba via NYC now SF), Dandy was on tumbadora while Oreste was on bongo and Timbales. Ray Romero was also a great bongocero with Ray Baretto I could go on for days on great bongo players but not were they are from thats not relevent and the question could only lead to arguments and theres enough of that here over other matters of opinion which like butts we all have. Like I have had to say at many street Rumbas shut The F**k up and play the drum. LOL

IJust that and then i'll e quiet in this thread: everytime i hear a musical question who is the best in any musical aspect i remember the pick up lines in the 3rd grade when I asked a girl which song is the best... If you ask me now which is my favourite, the best song, the best artist, guitarist, bongo player.... I simply can't answer, cause I see the music as a language and the musicians the writers, can't tell you at all who is the best, cause their 'stories',books (whether album or their discography) are fun to listen, 'read' if you want and i would sure be doing unjustice to all others. I agree with leedy and docaroyo. If i understand question like that as stated up, it is a bit ignorant, but if I understand bongo's question as a which 'school, country, culture, genre' gives you more or less versatilities of techniques, rhythms, ... then it is a question beyond my knowledge, but I'm sure that the growth of playing possibilities grows with mixing and geting to know other cultures, instruments, techniques... I'm also sure that all the great musicians knew and know that and I'm sure that their wish isn't to become the best but to be able to speak more and richfull, show offs are short termed ego maniacs, but can be inspiring ;D, a credit for that. Whether is jimi hendrix or joe satriani on electric guitar, i don't care, for me personally they are both great, but my winner of my taste depends on a feelings that i'm momentarily in. For me usually humble and devoted musician are all the best.
my last 2 cents here,

Good post . I replied to the original post and probably shouldnt have tbh .The whole question is redundant to me as it matters not where someone comes from regarding how good they are at something . Of course people who come from a culture of hand drumming , in this case bongo , will have a head start . But there are countless examples of musicians from other cultures who have reached high levels of excellence on numerous instruments . I see people all the time from around the world who are amazing Irish traditional musicans , the japanese being a good example .
