vintage bogos

Postby kevin.stears » Fri Dec 24, 2010 5:42 pm

Hi all Im new to this type of instrument and need a bit of help please. I recently purchased a set of vintage (1960's) Olympic bongos. These have the drum lug style tensioners. They were made by premier and badge olympic. Now as I say im new to this and would not know if they were considered good or low end in thier day (the premier kits drum kits were good at this time) but they are not in a bad condition and I will refurbish then up to a good standard.
what I need help on is the heads. Those that came with them are split and drawn on and so I need to replace them. Im not sure exactly how the heads are measured on Bongos but the Macho shell is 6" diameter and the Hembra is 8"
can any one tell me if these are still standard sizes and If so who manufactures replacment heads (not too expensive please as they are my first set

Ludwig makes a synthetic head - Weather Master - that is probably your best bet. They cost about $15 and should be a perfect fit. Have a drum shop order them for you.
