Kind of ugly, but they are from the PP era, and I'm hoping there's some fine walnut or mahogany under that ugly paint! My mahoganies sound sooo good I'd love to have another pair.

Bummer, I huess I'll find out soon enough! I've already got a garfield set made of rubberwood from 1985, nice and aged now and they sound good, but the mahogany dums have such a nice hembra sound. WEll I gues I can clean them up and set one up with plastic skins for outdoor gigs and put skin on the other set for indoor stuff.

Not ugly at all! Those old green ones are classics. I'd keep them original. If you want to check the wood just strip a little on the inside. I once had an LP set that was oak - real US red oak - not Thai rubberwood "oak". A lot of different woods got used in the 70's - some small runs, some experiments. You got a good buy.

I've got a mahogany, i just figured that 140 was a great price for a mahogany or walnut PP. It would be nice if they were actually made of NA oak, it always sems to have a tighter drier sound than the rubberwood drums. Guess I'll find out when I get the drums.

At least the pattern on the drum is the same as my PP mahogany, my rubberwood 85's have a different pattern of 3 double stripes carved into the shell as opposed to the five lines carved in the middle of the shell. I'm going to assume they made that change when they moved production to thailand.

Pictures can be deceiving, got the drums yeserday and there definitely is a dark wod underneath the paint, must be either mahogany or walnut. Not sure if I'll srip them or leave as is, for now some new heads and a new lug to see how they sound!

Yup, don't want to strip them after all, I though when I first bought them that somebody had painted them over , since they are original I don't want to ruin a collectors piece, I'm about 90% sure that they're mohagany as well and I already have a set of mahoganies. If they don't sell I'll keep them, I have some gope calf skin drum heads that I don't use and will tuck one on the macho, I think it'll sound great. AS you say cuco, in today's economy they might just sit, even at 125.

I have a set like that. I bought it years ago, stripped and refurbished. The shells are white oak. Nice sounding set.

Was it the metal flake sparkle? The wood underneath these is definitely not oak, it's a reddish brown so I'm pretty sure it's mahogany, can't be 100% sure though until all the paind comes off. If they don't sell I'll probably tuck some new heads and keep them.

Yes they had that green sparkle paint. This particular set is not mahogany, is white oak.
I would not mind having me a set with sparkle, back in the day you had all this generic
bongos with the sparkle paint. One thing to consider is if you decide to strip them, is
that the paint may contain "Lead" and you do not want to come in contact with it.
