Very nice wood, hopefully a good glue job also, the hardware lives a lot to be desired .. I just don't trust the crown with only one rivet screw holding the ear, not well thought out design. The width of the top and bottom crown are out of proportion. Not very aesthetic. And if one of the drums has five lugs , not very comfortable and very uneven weight. Mario needs an Industrial design consultant..here at your service. :D

I have no experience with Isla, other than what I have been reading here, and I don't like the look of the hardware either, but I have to defend Mario on the money angle. As others have said here, other than Martin Cohen, no one gets rich making conga and bongo drums. Most drum makers barely squeak by and most have other jobs. It has to be a labor of love.

As Cadenza says, there is are many drums out there that sound great, there are also many drums that aren't well made and its aesthetics look like shite and lslas is one of them. Just look at that hardware i have seen better on aluminum pots. Take it from a trained eye , beautiful wood...but the rest gets a 3 from me. Love to see that wood in Mathews hands.

Rumbero4ever wrote:by the way I also want to buy a set of congas from Isla. I contacted them and they sent me a picture of a ziricote conga. I like it and if they sound as good as my bongos, I'm going for it. I've heard Islas's congas on youtube and they sound great. Anyone of you guys like the sound of Islas congas? Give me some feed back.

Seriously man you must be trolling. If you really want info on Isla read the huge thread that has built up over the last two years and make your own mind up.

AT THIS POINT, IT'S JUST TOO RISKY.
TOO RISKY FOR QUALITY.
TOO RISKY FOR A LACK OF ACCESS; AND STRAIGHT FORWARD/HONEST COMUNNICATION.

JUST TOO RISKY TO TAKE A CHANCE WITH YOUR HARD EARNED CASH AT THIS POINT.

WITH THAT SAID. THE REASON WHY ISLA OWNERS ALWAYS MENTION THE SOUND OF THEIR DRUMS IS BECAUSE, ISLA DRUMS DO POSSESS THAT SPECIAL AND RARE AUTHENTIC SOUND. YES, MANY DRUMS CAN SOUND GREAT AS WELL. I'M ALSO HAPPY WITH MY LP'S. BUT, WHEN IT COMES TO THAT HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER SOUND, ISLA'S HAVE IT.

BUY SECOND HAND, FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE IF YOU CAN.
ASK YOUR QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU SPEND.

I just want to add to Charlies comment and confirm Isla do have a great sound old skool Los Munequitos de Matanzas.
But would I take a gamble with my money today? seems there are too many people un happy with production from Belize.

I do hope Mario can put rite the wrongs which have happened of Late.

@Rumbero4ever Most of the questions you have asked have been covered here already . I suggest that you spend some time reading and lurking here - and maybe use the search function. Then, if you still have questions, ask away.

A Kevlar macho head?? Sounds like something I have to try too. What do I need to know? How did you cut it after it was mounted?

Where did the Kevlar come from? Is it from a retired drum head? I once put a Remo Kevlar snare(bottom)head on the top of my snare drum to be used as a batter head. I really liked the sound and the action. It was broken after several years by a guy with arms twice the size of mine! I saved the material and have used it epoxy or Goop to repair hard to fix items such as tool handles and plastic boat fittings. Thanks in advance, Buck

If anyone is interested I do have some snare kevlar heads for sale , you will have to cut and fit. The kevlar that I have has a plastic coating. Most drum corps use them on their snares.
