1950's Gon Bop Restoration

Postby maSSivdrums » Wed Apr 14, 2010 7:23 am

Aloha,
Attached are pic's of a pair of 1950's Gop Bop Mahogany Congas I found on Craigslist a few months back. Both have 10 1/2 inch heads, 6 lugs and both came with, what looks like original alma's. I sanded them down, tinted them in a alternate pattern stave and hand rubbed them with several coats of oil. They stiill have the original heads that still have some great ol skool sound!! Wicked slaps and dry open tones!!

Keep on Poundin' Aloha, maSSivdrums

Looks like we have a future conguero in the works, that little one sure looks to be enjoying those great looking tubs. Good job and congratulations on a job well done.

Aloha Gang,

Mahalo for the kinds words. I'm kinda impressed myself with how the tubs came out. The hardware showed little pitting in the lugs and side plate, and the metal bands were tight. The crowns were worn, but you could still read the serial numbers stamped on them.
Yes, I have a future Conguero I need to mold and mentor. Someday those tubs will be passed on to him, and hopefully when they reach the century mark in age he will still be enjoying them!!

Keep on Poundin'... Ahhhloha!!! maSSivdrums

Congrats to your beautiful congas!
It is amazing that those old skins do their job.

I recently put a very thick cow skin on my Gon Bops
conga, and it also has that cool dry old-skool sound :D .

All the best, and keep on drumming, young man :)

My 1997 Gon Bop congas, show that I had to replace a stupid metal wing nut adjuster with a black rubber covered nylon wing bolt. ( lower left side ) This change prevented the wing nut from gauging deep scratches in the wood shells & also removed the metal on metal that would have scratched the chrome off the extention portion of the stand. Not shown ~ is I removed the wheels & added rubber feet which is stable & does not rattle.
