70'S GON BOPS

Postby juancho » Thu Jul 23, 2009 2:50 pm

Thanks to all of you........Am now looking into purchasing a set of Congas to go along with my bongos. I came across these and would like your input. Seller says they bought them brand new in the 70's and they come with a hard case and heavy duty stand.

Go for it! Check for cracks & loose inlay.
Price should be between $300 - $500

Those are oak international model, very nice drums. If the price is right, you will not be dissapointed.

Am still looking around for my first set of congas and I came across these. The guy is asking $600.00 and would like your input. Attached are pictures and waiting on more but from this picture can you please tell me anything that I should be in the lookout fore? I notice that there are different lugs and on the wrong way on one of them. Let me know guys. They also look like they have been abandoned and not taken care of. Oh he mentioned they were potato signature. Or since am a novato on this should I go with something less cheaper.

PATATO,POTATO,BATATA ETC. I still think it's too much for the work that it needs. This would be a project to keep someone busy for a while. I will offer him less and see what he says. Like the lotto says "you never know" He originally had it at $1000.00 then he came down to $900.00 and now $600.00 so let's see if comes down more...........si estoy hablando mucha lata......parenme.

Oye Juancho,

I think the price is reasonable. The do need new heads and a good cleaning, but they are professional congas. They are Patatos after "El Pequeño Gigante De Los Cueros", Carlos "El Patato" Valdes. If you want brand new congas for a bit more, I selling 3 LP's original model brand new. I posted them in the forum. They cost my son in law over $1,600, he will let them go for $849. Aqui estan, son nuevas de paquete.

Que tal viejo Dario,
Yeah I saw these cherries on ebay pero desafortunadamente estan fuera de mi liga. De todas maneras gracias por tu opinion y voy a ver que hago con estas papas del pequeño gigante y les dejo saber.

Thats a good price on Dario's set, you could also get a new set of classics and Patato's as they are on sale at a few online sites. Quinto starting @ $339 and up.

That is a smoking price for Dario's set i wish i had the funds. The blue Patato's may be beauty in the rough those stickers come off a good cleaning with mineral spirits and new heads and you never know they could take on a whole new look. I saw them on craigs list the other day in South Florida.

$600 seems fair for 3 Patatos, but they are in rough shape. The heads would definitely have to go though, so expect atleast another $150 or so for 3 new skins. Already you're at $750, I think Dario's drums are worth the extra $100 considering they are in brand new shape and already have decent skins.

Yes I did. Don't get me wrong i think Dario's congas are a much better deal. But if Dario wasn't selling anything i would make a deal on the patatos and i would definitely make them look good again. Yes they need work for sure i don't count skins because unless they have great skins already most of us change them out anyway. But If i had that money laying around i would be laying it in Dario's hands right now as we speak. But i don't :( If you had seen a couple of my congas when i got them you would have turned away but i worked them and now they are definitely presentable. Keep searching be patient you'll definitely find what you want at a price you can afford. Keep us posted on your progress I'm eager to see you find something you like.

Yeah I know Dario's are a great deal and believe me if I had the $$$ I would but at the same time if I get blue ones at my price I offered it would be a sweet project. No doubt I would take them first to Mathew for the hardware and take it from there. We'll see
Cojanla con take it easy.
