KING CONGA wrote:I was just blessed with a set of 1992 CP originals, given to me by my friend David. I know that they are not a pro-grade conga but I must say that these really do sound good, the hardware is in excellent condition, old school, with nice and thick side plates. I have a question for all of you who have restored drums, would it be worth it for me restore these drums? I like the natural wood look. As you can tell they’ve been around the block although nothing serious.
Can some one please give me some history on these drums, quality, where they were made, type of wood etc. any information is greatly appreciated, thanks.thanks.

Nice grab, these CPs!
The hardware is sturdy for sure.
The wood is presumably rubber wood aka Thai oak,
but that is neither good or bad, it is simply the kind of
wood that was used at that time. Do the congas have the
date inside the shells?
As far as I know, Cosmic Percussion used to be a subcompany
of LP, but with its own strategy. Affordability, but with a good
standard. They brought out the first Matador congas, e.g.!
I have got a fiberglass tumbadora that says "Matador by CP".

All in all, 1980s and early 90s CP-products are really fine
compared to the later crappy stuff, so if you want to sand it
down to get the natural wood look, why not?
BTW are they 10+11" sizes or bigger ones (which would be better
of course)?
Peace & drum

Unfortunately they are only 10" and 11" and thats what makes me wonder about investing the time and money in restoring them

You might want to leave them as they are then.
Having that said,
I embarked on a fun journey a while ago and made something out of a
similar drum like you have, added LP sideplates I had left, sanded and sprayed
et voilà, I got a sweet little green requinto

Yes, considering the not too bad quality of your CPs, you might do so.
The 10" drum in the pic is really cute and bites tremendously. :)
Peace & drum
