Which are the vergara's Dario ? I'm guessing the first two with the bands in the last picture.

The Vergaras are the customized ones with the jungle paintings on them, they sound as good as they look. My friend had them fiberglassed by Beltran Marine, a local yacht manufacturer and had a local Haitian painter do the art work. He was selling them and I was tempted, the photo was taken in my house. They sound incredible. Here they are again.

They look beautiful. I have a friend here in Miami that bought 4 Volcanos and a pair of bongos, when I examined the drums, I noticed that the congas do not have almas. Is that the case with Volcanos? In my book, almas are a must, specially in top of the line very expensive congas. I'll be afraid to crank up a macho with a medium thickness skin without an alma in it, no matter how well the conga is kept and treated, in years to come (over 10 yrs.) an out-of-round condition is bound to happen.

From what I understand the staves on the Volcanos are cut to shape and not steam formed just like Islas, I don't know how accurate the statement is but I was told that when staves are form cut that the congas do not need almas, my question is, in the past were there any congas manufactured with pre cut/shape staves? I believe that that would be the best source for an accurate answer.
by the way Gallichio those are some awesome drums, what is the waiting period for a set of three?

Those Volcanoes are really beautiful, but those lug covers are totally FUGLY

I can't understand why anyone keeps them on,seriously, they hide those super
shiny lugplates, and just look like great big gobs of goop stuck on the drum.

Moperc's Bumperc are a much better solution.

I will try to answer your questions the best that I can. Thomas Alexander has the best warranty in the business. His shells do not need almas. He uses 144 biscuits on each drum that act as dowels but are also wood and shaped like flat footballs. This gives the shell great strength. I am not sure how he makes each solid stave but he told me they are formed into its finished shape before assembly creating a stress free drum with no spring back. If you order a set of 3 or 4 you can have them in less than 2 months. I don't care for the large covers protectors on the side plates. I also think they cover two much of the beauty of the hardware. They do offer the best protection. But some may have small children at home and just want them protected. He also has a real nice brown rubber bumpers. I have these on my Volcanos. I will try to find some photos of the bumpers. Starting in 1995 after 25 years as a woodworker he began building Tumbadoras. Thats almost 14 years now making congas. To my knowledge he has never had a drum built by him to go out of round or come apart. I don't know if any of his drums ever suffered any damage and needed to be repaired. I will ask him. No two drums will look exactly the same. The wood used in the first photo is called Figured Monkeypod. Some lucky person has these and I will be willing to bet he or she is very happy with them. Notice the bumpers are brown to match the congas. This photo is Koa Wood. I love these drums and this drum company. "Where Every Drum is an Original" Just like all of us.

the moperc bumperc is actually attached to the side plate. you can replace the rubber on it but, you cant remove the entire bumperc system off.

Isn't the Bumperc just an oversizes hard rubber washer?
The brown ones on the Volcanoe look very similar just bigger.

I have ordered and received my bumpercs from Michel and I must tell you that they are "not" attached to the side plate, they are hard rubber surrounding a washer that fits on the tension rod just above the nut.

I cannot answer definitively, but here's some more info on the steam-bending vs. cut-to-shape differences:
My understanding, having spoken with Matt Smith about this, is that some woods can be steam bent and some cannot. Oak, yes. Mahogany, no. I don't know if it's absolutely impossible to steam bend some woods or it's just too problematic in terms of the wood not being able to consistently handle that kind of stress and cracking or whatever during or after the process, but that's the gist of what he said. And I believe the cut-to-shape process creates more waste wood than cutting slats for steam bending, and thus more wood is required.
