Mule, donkey, horse skins ?????

Postby OLSONGO » Sat Jul 19, 2008 6:40 pm

Ok my bros, this calls for an expert on skins... I am interested in knowing in detail the characteristics of the different skins available.
We have heard plenty about cow, bull, steer, water buffalo and mule. Now has anyone experienced donkey and horse ?? which is thinner thicker, which ages better ?? Thank you

I have tried mule skin and donkey which are thick skins, versus the new buffalo skins...cow is also thick if it comes from the stomach where all the skins are taken from ...now I never ever heard of using or seeing horse skin on a drum, and u know what it never ever even crossed my mind in all my years of playing...ummm...horse skin.?...Johnny Conga...

JC... It never occurred to me also, I recently read a good formula to go by, the bigger the animal the thicker the skin...makes sense. Another bit of information, skin from around the area of the stomach from the female side of the animal , stretches out ...naturally ( for breeding purpose) , is easier on the hands, but has less life. Sometime ago played on a quinto with bulls skin , it was thick and tough on your hands and on the drum also; egged it out.
