Abakua...what can one say that hasn't been said. As you know, no handmade drum will ever be perfect, aside from the minor imperfections there will always be people who have either had bad experiences with someone's drums, or perhaps a drum came out subpar...from my experience...I don't think there is anyone out there making a drum like it. I encourage talking to Matt before he ups the price again (its currently at $750 a drum) and seeing what he has to offer. Matthew takes alot of pride in his work, and his finished product is a testament to that. In a conversation i had with him the other day, venting a little frustration, he wondered how the drum business got to where it is now, he told me,
"You know back in the day people were more demanding in the sense that I couldn't have even thought to put out a drum, much less sell it, if it didn't meet the hard won expectations of serious players." Needless to say, Matthew is not getting rich out of his business and he probably wonders why he is even doing this in the first place some days. But he is still doing it, and in the meantime he is probably one of the last. It does take a while to get a finished drum and you can easily get a cheaper decent drum for cheaper, but man, once you open that box and pull it out, you'll be asking yourself why you waited so long....
another option is talking to Cali or Isaac with JCR....i thought about going through JCR for my drum needs a while back but when i called Cali said, he ain't making congas right now, so i think its hit an miss with them, Isaac maybe able to shed more light.
