Gracias OZ!!

Thank you for the information, good to hear Michel offered you a discount.
My Moperc bongos do sound great, the projection is outstanding. Even when you crank it up, its still loud. Normally cranking it up the volume starts to diminish and loose resonance.
I can imagine what the congas would sound like.

Yeah Oz I think your the only one! It's cool of you to post about them!

I was looking for a video of Yambu and found this, that's a Moperc Salsa quinto on stage there. Seems like Moperc is really sponsoring Cubans. It's good.

Saludos Hermanos

hey guys Michel Oullette the owner of moperc sponsors a trip every year to CUBA. and yes you will be getting lessons from the percussionists of the Munequito de Matanzas and other local iconic bands.
this year coming up i will on Johnny's conga camp around march. however the following year 2009, i think i will be making a trip the mecca of the tambor.

I don't know about you guys but those mopercs look official...actually alot of these drums are now at the same price point, w/ the 20% discount a custom cubano is around $750, a drum from Jay Bereck is $750, and drum from Matthew Smith is $750, Isla's are the only ones still at around $500-$600 depending on what you need...decisions, decisions, decisions.....

Moperc has the advantage of a faster turn around than Mathew Smith. I have a friend waiting for over a year for his, I'm not saying it's not worth it though ,

I had a set of Moperc Cubano Congas. One of the last sets to be made in mahogany wood. They were very nice and sounded good. I don't know what wood Michel is using but the new congas are stained to look like mahogany wood. Nice stainless hardware. One of the best congas made.

The mahogany mopercs are classics, best sounding drums I've ever laid my hands on.

I heard the maple version of these drums back on New Years day, the Moperc definitely stood out from the other drums in the rumba, just that much clearer sounding with a more volume.

Very nice sounding and very well made with well thought out construction details.

For example, the screws holding the lug plates to the shell are countersunk into the lug plate and use an allen wrench/key head instead of a phillips screw.

The lugs were the meatiest I have ever seen.

Aaargh, you're holding back on me bro :D

So how were the Moperc's compared to SOS? what wood shell were they?

Man - congas or monitors, monitorss or congas ?? too many things to ponder. Too many overseas trips cutting down on the budget

Hey Tonio,
haven't heard from you in a while.

I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky, I get the chance to play and listen to other peoples very nice drums, yet I don't have a set of my own yet. :O

Anyways compared to the SOS's I have played, which would be 3 different sets, all in oak I am pretty sure, the Moperc sound is a little brighter and more lively, and clear. The SOS's seem to be a little deeper and heavier in tone.

but you know I never had a chance to compare them side by side, I'm going from memory. Part of it for sure is how the owners of these drums preferred to tune the drums.

They are both very well made drums, the Moperc use more modern hardware, the SOS more old school. Moperc uses stainless steel, the SOS's either chrome or somehow coat their hardware black, not sure what method they use.

SOS uses phillips head screws on those classic rectangle lug plates, Moperc uses allen heads on their triangle shaped lug plates. Both use massive lugs.

I'd be happy with either set, they both sound fantastic. I think it's a shorter wait for the Moperc's right now.

BNB, thanks bro.
As you may know, I know the details of Moperc and SOS.

I just haven't heard Mopercs in real life, with my hands. To get a set of Mopercs, I would definately need that.

did the Maple Mopercs have a good bass tone , open tone? I would surmise that the slaps would be good and bright, just wondering about- bass, open tones ya know? Mostly about the sustain in open tones.

<------------- What is that weird stain on the head of the conga on your avatar? just had to ask.
saludos
if any of you guys are ever in Texas somewhere close to corpus you are welcomed to give a visit.
i know is a far fetch but you never know. but, we can jam and you can get to check out what a conga is really suppose to sound. LOL
i would actually like to play some of those other boutique drums. and compare sound, i would imagine quality wont be an issue on these type of drums.
$1300. for the set on craiglist. might as well get a brand new set. that is if you can wait 2 or 3 months. if not then i guess is worht buying them.

let see if i did this right. here's a vid of my man
"Tiko Akui" perc for the former Cumibia kings

I only heard one Moperc, a conga, it's open tone sounded perfect, and definitley stood out from the other drums. Sustain was not a long sustain like a Volcano, or flat, it was just right, a little louder and clearer than the other drums in the rumba.

I had a chance to sit behind it for a little bit, the drum sounded awesome with the characteristics I mentioned in my previous post.

I have tried a lot of boutique and vintage drums, I prefer the sound of the Moperc to most.

That craigslist add posted above is in San Diego, there's your chance to try them out.
