LP Aspire wood or Pearl Primero Pro fiber??

Hello congueros!

I need your opinion, what think about LP Aspire wood set or Pearl Primero Pro fiber conga set??

I'm a begginer conguero.

If your decision is financially based then i would go for used equipment like a set of Matadors. There are other affordable drums in the new and used market that will serve you well. I cannot speak for the primero pro's but can tell you the aspires are terrible drums. Just yesterday I picked up a used matador conga for a steal at less than 40% of the new price from a guy. Get the best you can afford and please don't buy one of the commonly found sets that are 10 and 11 inch. If you get 2 drums you want the conga and tumba opinions will vary on that but it is probably the most common set up.

My problem is the money, I have only $400 US for my set 11" y 12" (I have big hands!) but in the market of Mexico City only can buy these models.

Tninking in your comment is better wait for a best set in the used market.

Aspires really are terrible?? if change the skin??

Aspires have a bad reputation on this forum, but I use a pair for practice and they give me what I need. You have to coax sound out of them, but that is good for your technique. You don't want to learn on drums that make all the sounds for you.

Remember, the people who write on this forum are enthusiasts and are very dicriminating.

Hey Traumtyp, I agree with VinnieL on this one. I would try to get a set of used Matadors in Mexico City. Between the Aspires and the Pearl Primero Pro Fiberglass I think I would go with the Pearl set. I am not a big fan of fiberglass but I think those are a little bit better than the Aspires. The reality is that like Bachikaze is saying the technique is more important and you can make either one of those sets sound good. My main reason for getting a better used set is so that you don't end up having to upgrade down the road when you get better and you want some better sounding congas.

Get a better pair of used drums than a new set of Aspires.

Aspires have other issues besides the sound, weak lugs, and thin hardware being examples, making the drum easy to ruin or break.

As you say, you're a beginner conguero.

LP Aspires are intended for a beginner /intermediate player.

Aspires are OK. They are definitely not terrible. Just don't pay too much for them. I payed around $200 USD ($275 Aust) for a used pair.

Amongst my conga collection of LP Palladiums, Gon Bops and fibreglass LPs, I have a used set of LP Aspires.

For some particular gigs that I play, I actually prefer the Aspires.
They have their own sound and it's fine. I also don't have to worry so much about anyone stealing them from my car after the gig!

I also use them as rehearsal instruments.

If I had bought the most expensive drums I could afford as a beginner, I never would have appreciated the difference between lower cost drums and top of the line drums. Less expensive drums like Aspires also make you work on your technique a little harder.

Hey Traumtyp, congratulations on your set of Aspires I think they will work for you. They are not the best but they are not the worst either. My first conga I bought at used at Krazy Kat music here in San Antonio and it was so beat up and ugly but it was good for me to learn on because I had to use good technique to get a good sound from it.

The Aspires will be great for you. And if you improve a lot and want to upgrade to better drums, the Aspires will give you good service as home practice drums, which is how I mainly use mine.

The Aspires I currently own have been bought and sold among my drumming community for many years. They have been used at performances, drum circles, and as practice/rehearsal instruments. A local drum teacher has expressed interest in buying mine, so they may adventure even farther into the San Diego drumming community. Occasionally someone points and says, "Hey, I know those drums!"

The heads are original and still sound good enough for performances.

I am pleased to announce that the Aspire already passed into history!

I just purchased a set of 3 congas Meinl and a matador tumbadora!

They were quite right to tell me the bad of the Aspire, and now I realize I'm very happy with my new set!!

Now a question ...

What is the best position to play the 4 congas ?
