My dancing shoes are polished at the ready but it would be great to play a litte Drum while Im out there on vacasion .

Congadelica,

I am of Dominican and Colombian descent. I spent many years back and forth to the DR playing baseball. While there are certainely great congueros in the DR I would personally go to Puerto Rico or Cuba myself for learning. As this is probably a family trip may I suggest hooking up with a Tamborero? While this percussion instrument is overlooked it can give incredible rythms beyond what you hear in merengue and has been used with beautiful results in Latin Jazz. Look up Mario Rivera on you tube and you will find a video there that is Latin Jazz with an outstanding tamborero that was refreshing to watch as it was different. I myself will add tambora in the future to add to my percussion instruments. It is really a beautiful but overlooked instrument. http://youtube.com/watch?v=53v07nKKdoA& ... ed&search=

Congadelica, I was in Punta Cana in June this year (at the Iberostar resort to be more accurate.) The closest town is Higüey and I don't think that you're going to find much there; except some old folks playing tipico for tourists. Yes, that area of DR is all about tourism and green-backs my friend. However, most resorts have their own bands and they play good. I'm pretty sure that they'll be willing to teach you some merengue for a few bucks.
Enjoy the beautiful DR!!

Paqui ,

Thanks for the insite I kind of realised it was a touristy place ,Ill be staying at the melia caribe hotel .
My intention is to maybe ask the congureo playing at the resort for lessons . It is my second time In DR I was married there 10 years ago . I just though it might be a good idea to learn a little while Im over there .
I was in cuba last November , It was only when I got home I realised i missed a great opportunity , Im new to things Conga well Ive been learning for 8 months now .
If I could turn the clock back Id be over mantanzas quick style.
Im sure to visit Cuba again in the future .

Thanks

Marco
