I love the excitement, but can we refrain from using the "n word " on this board? Ancestors went through too much for it to be thrown around like this and it detracts from the message.

Yo brown 56 don't get bent out of shape the "n" word as we all know may be used in many ways and i am sure ironman didn't mean it in the way you may be thinking, so chill.

Peace out

I'm aware of how it's used and understand how he meant it. This is not really against Ironman. I'm sure he's cool and I grew up hearing it used like this.

I also understand the history of the word and believe the word should be retired. The words we choose to use are important, and there are many others that would give the same meaning but aren't associated with the horrors that that one is. I will always respect my ancestors and our continuing worldwide struggle for dignity. It's in that spirit that I made my request. Yes, we move on and there are many things that linger -- I accept that. We also have a history of making positives out of negatives. I understand all this. None of this means that we should take these lingering effects of degradation lightly (Not when we can look around us and see from other indicators that all is not exactly well). At least I won't take it lightly - I'll chill when the problem's solved.

I'm not going to get on a soapbox, I'm just asking that we not use it here. Is that really too much to ask? I mean this is a forum for music, which has the power to uplift more than anything I know. It really is a positive, unifying force. I think this is a special board, I usually just read, but I love the fact that I'm "in touch" with percussionists from all over the world. I've learned from folks that I never would have met.

Maybe others don't understand it, but I don't want or need these sort of reminders of the negative aspects of our experience and honestly, I don't want us to spread the impression that it's ok to use names that have hurt and continue to hurt so many.

I don't care to see or hear those words in this type of forum...they're offensive.

FYI, the all-caps on 2 instances of the "word" used by Ironman, which I've quoted above, are mine--for highlighting.

Intention can be a mitigating factor. I believe and agree that Ironman honestly didn't mean any malice in using the "n" word. Bizarre as it may seem for some, he actually meant this as a term of endearment.

Mario Punchard is Cuban-American and if you saw him in one of his several YouTube rumba video performances, also demonstrating his Isla drums (http://youtube.com/results?search_query ... ercussions)--he's the one to your left playing the requinto or quinto--you can see that (just like many Cubans) he's partly of African descent. He's also partly of French descent. More accurately, as he himself told me, he's Creole which explains his surname, Punchard.

I live in the East Bay Area of Northern California and occasionally go jamming (vocal harmonizing) with my some of my Afro-American brothers in Oakland. I love singing R&B songs and have been labelled by my Black brothers as someone who has "soul". As a result, they've called me their "n----" or "dawg". I know they sincerely mean this as a compliment and I've taken it as such and not as an offense by any means.

As much as Brown56 has exercised his free speech right to express his sensitivity to the "word", Ironman likewise equally expressed his own free speech right. Both exercise of free speech rights, although they appear on the surface to be conflicting, have to be respected as long as no public law is violated.

I believe that Brown56's request to Ironman to refrain from continuing to use the "word" within our Forum is a very reasonable one and was done quite civilly. Nevertheless, Ironman's use of the "word" wasn't at all meant to be a slur but, on the contrary, was meant to be a term of endearment. Furthermore, Ironman explained the cultural (his own personal one) context by which he used the "word".

Ironman has the prerogative to continue his manner of speech. Brown56 has the option of simply "tuning out" Ironman's continued use of the "word". Reasonable and mature brothers that we all are in this Forum, I'm sure that we'll all see a "happy medium".

Please forgive me for my usual paralegal and verbose bent in expressing myself. I was just a few credits away from earning my Law degree here in the U.S. Also, I spent 15 of my 18-year corporate work experience working for the legal department of some of the biggest computer companies in the so-called "Silicon Valley" here in the S.F. Bay Area--until I became permanently (but not totally) disabled and was able to return to my 2 lifelong passions: art (especially music) and cars.

Mi dos sentimos.

Peace and music to all, :D
