Got a new El Piernas tumba!!!!!

Hello to everyone,

Got my new custom made El Piernas tumba from Cali, Colombia. My brother and his wife, she's from Cali, went to Hector Rochas shop and ordered it for me and brought it back to the states. All I can say is wow, I was in awe when I first took it out of the box. I spoke with el senor Rocha, he insisted to speak with me because , he didn't want to take my brothers word on what my spec's were. He was very professional and extraordinarilly willing to accomodate whatever it was I requested. It's quite heavy considering it's made from Guayacan, thats the wood he uses, 5 rings and a mule skin head. It stands ~31" and the heads 13". The bajo on this thing is bottomless and it just keeps getting better by the day with the mule skin. The skin is quite thick for a mule skin and has lots of character in it.

I'd love to post pic's but, I haven't figured out how to do that. If anyone could walk me through it I'll be more than glad to post them to the community so that you may see the El Piernas tumba. Any questions are welcome, I can talk for days about my new tumba.

Is Guayacan some type of Caoba I know I used to hear about it in Cuba but I'm not familiar with it. Looking forward to seeing it. Peace

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the compliments. My son loves to beat on the drums and he does it quite often even if I'm not playing, he gets on them and has at it. I believe he finds enjoyment in playing the tumbas.
I'm very pleased with the tumba and it sounds amazing. I have more pics from different angles, of the head and the thickness of the wood in comparison to a standard "Sharpie" marker, to please your curiosities.

Sorry for the picture sizes guys. I don't know how to adjust. I play congas, not computadoras.

Here you can see the thickness of the metal of the bottom ring, it's the thickest I've seen. You can also see that the inside is sanded smooth.

Alright it worked. This one compares the "Sharpie" markers size to the woods thickness.

On the inside, you can see that it's been sanded down and the backing plates for added strength.
