If I lubricate the bearing edge with wax (I have beeswax), then the gaffer's tape won't stick there. Where then, does gaffer's tape go, should I attempt to use some? I thought that went on the bearing edge. But then, I never used the tape trick before. Never yet had to.

Does tape EVER go on a bearing edge? Or is it strictly to be applied to the underside of the skin itself?

I never heard of tape on the bearing edge. Always heard of tape going on the head itself.

The wax is to let the skin move across the bearing edge more easily and evenly to aid in even tuning.

if you just want to get a good seal on a new head or an existing head. flip the head upside down and fill it with water about halfway up. the only wet spot should be the palying surface and maybe half inch below the playing surface. this will create a new seal if youre swaping heads or just putting a new mounted head.

my bad looks like diceman already explained this a few post ago.
another thing you dont need beeswax or tape or any other thing. just make sure the surface that makes contact with the head is clean. thats all.

God bless

Whopbamboom, the tape reduces ringing by dampening the vibrations, when attached to playing surface or underneath it. Tape sort tries to emulate the effect of a thicker head. It has no use on the bearing edge.

Wax or paraffin can be used to ease movement of the skin over the bearing edge. My first cheapo bongo did not have any varnish on the bearing edge, so paraffin helped a lot, but if the bearing edge of your Gio's is well finished and smooth, you may need not apply anything.
