JC, No, Moperc's do not have almas. the staves are cut and the wood is also plyed (dont know how many ply's). but, i dont really think there's a need for it.

God Bless

An Alma (from my understanding) is a inner ring just below the bearing edge. Oddly, the real translation is scafolding or rope. Skin On Skins have them. The only ones I ever encountered. Actually I have heard a alma buzz on a friend's SOS segun before.

BTW OZ , thank you for the piccies link!! Michel sure did mount them low. You have much thread left on the lugs?? If not, time to get some washers :( or remount.

Mopercs are ply? hmmm

It's a round flat-metal hoop screwed to the inside of the shell, just below the top, the purpose being to prevent the head from warping and going out of round. Some woods, wood curing and construction techniques are more prone to warping than others, especially as a drum ages and goes through years of temperature and humidity changes.

The story I heard is that in Cuba it was originally called "arma" (from armadura, meaning armor/protection/defense) and then this word eventually made it to either NYC or Puerto Rico and because arma was slang and not a known/proper word, it was understood as "alma" (soul, which made some sense, I guess, being a known word). Also figuring into the misunderstanding was the Cuban/Puero Rican pronunciation differences between "r" and "l" (others here can speak to this more than I can). Regardless, it has became "alma."

JCRs, Skin on Skins, Juniors, Matthew Smiths - lots of quality drums have them, and I've never heard a buzz. Certainly possible, I suppose, but the almas are just screwed in, so easy enough to fix by either tightening the screws holding the alma to the inside of the shell, or putting in a small piece of tape or something to fill the gap between the alma and shell that's causing the buzz.

Hey, you got to check out the animated logo
section of the Moperc site, it has a pretty good
recording of their drums...

he he I like that logo !!

But the sound track is a djembe.

BTW, I went to Guitar center today to check out the Gon Bops tumbao forkloricoSD mentioned. That is a Meinl or Typhoon OEM with gon bops (DW)specified color, and logo. LOL GC only had a quinto that was marred big time. I took a look inside the shell, and yup the sideplate bolts go right into the stave joints.

Anyway , I then comensed to check out Gio Galaxies. Not bad, not too much ringing, though they had industrial carpet o the floor.

Sorry for getting OT .

they dont have ply's, originally i thought they did because i saw a few seams on each drum but it turned out to be the staves glued together vertically. but whats funny is that the seam is on the outside and not on the inside of the drum.
yeah theres still enough thread left on them, ill never put washers on my drums. ill just remount them once they get to a point where is too low.
im really meticulous about the care and maintenace of my drums. my mopercs hardly ever get giged, but i do play them almost everyday.

God bless

I wonder, why don't they just put the lug mounting plates slightly lower.
Almost always new drums already have quite a bit of unused lug thread below the nut...
