I had tendinitis fairly bad due to playing. The best 'cure' is to reduce the movement of the tendons to allow it time to heal. Do not try to "work out the pain" by rotating and flexing your wrist. Pressure, heat, and isolation. That is why the spint is working. I used a product like one of these:

.sports wrist brace

They are for tennis elbow and can be found at sporting good stores. I could even play with it on I had to. It was a bit restrictive but eased the pain.

I also use ibuprofen before long gigs or if I feel the tension in my wrists before a show.

What also helped me is learning some tendon oriented warm up excercises to do when my tendinitis was not flared up. They helped keep my wrists aligned.

What helped THE MOST is figuring out what in my style of playing was causing it and correcting my technique. You can play loud without playing so hard you destroy your wrists
Take care, be good, and spread some around.

The most important thing is to take care of the diet, start getting a lot of Calsium,Iron,Potasium, and Vitemin A in your diet, and look in the market for something which is called Alfalfa,(use as Tea), and tell me how everything is going after that.Dr. Zaragemca

Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well and in an abundance of wonderul blessings!

Okay, so my story may not be on tendinitis, but it's uncomfortable at best. This weekend I took my baby girl out to San Diego to visit with my eldest son who's a pilot in the Navy. Well on the way back, Sunday, we stopped to get some gas and refreshments at a gas station, and a bee flew into the car. I tried to swoosh it out with my hand, when all of a sudden BAM! I stubbed my middle finger on the door, it was my Right hand. To add insult to injury, we were coming home early because I had a gig that evening.

I had contacted Abure Ivan, who was in town conducting a training seminar and invited him to the gig. I was really hoping that he would be able to show-up, this way I would have had him sit-in on congas and I would play bongo or toys. He called me just before the gig and informed me that due to his hectic schedule, he wouldn't be able to get there. We hooked up later in the week however and had lunch! Really a great person.

I played none the less, for three sets (I taped the shit outta' my finger) and avoided slaps with my Right hand. Now you brothers and sisters all know that when the rhythm gets you, all gloves are off, you play like there's no tomorrow, and I did just that. I had a blast, as did the other musicians and audience. It was a latin jazz gig in a club called "Bobby C's", pretty laid back. When I got home however, I took the tape off of my finger and it puffed-up like a 'ballpark frank' (American Humor). I have two gigs coming up, with the same crew (four piece; drums, piano, bass, and congas). I'm soaking it, applying pressure to it, and taking my ibuprophen as well, but I know that rest is the key.

Just thought I'd share.....

Many blessings Abures Mi!

Onile, I feel your pain! I hope it goes quickly.

As for me, thanks to the excellent advise from Amber, I am great now! My wrist is back with a vengeance!
Splint, ice, and Ibuprofen...it works.
I have learned along the way that practising with one hand is really something to do. All the great teachers advise it and it may be boring but it is very effective.
After a three weeks break I hit the congas running and was very surprised to have made a lot of progress. I think a combination of practising with just the left hand for a while and just letting my brain organise all the connections made a world of a difference. My playing is a lot cleaner tone wise.

I managed to play once at the end of my vacation in Singapore with this Columbian conguero who goes by the name of Faizer. A really cool guy who seems to be hording all the gigs in the region. We did a nice little rumba session. What a relief to be able to play again!

thanks all.

Alafia Abure Tone!
I hope that you are well and in an abundance of wonderful blessings Papa!

I'm glad to hear that you are recovered my brother. It's amazing that when you suffer a slight set back in your playing, you lean on the other playing attributes (left hand if your right handed, or vice-a-versa). I too have continued playing, in fact last night I played with a quartet, and was making up for the slaps I couldn't do with my right hand by slapping with my left. It's a visualization experience, knowing where the slap is supposed to be placed in your phrasing, and assigning it to the other hand. Chacho! It was fun, and actually pushed me to another level of playing.

I know brother Tone you can relate, it sounds like you experienced a similar happening with your playing!

Suave!

Tendinitis is rough, I know guys who take cod liver oil every day and they swear by it. They seem to think it helps. I dunno?
