French-Caribbean Music - conga partterns

Hi! It's been a while...

I'll be back this summer with the Compa/Zouk band and would like to refresh and expand my chops-library .

Can any of you recommend good books or websites where I could find this kind of patterns?

Thanks for your suggestion JC. I've listened to some Tabou Combo records and something from the Putumayo Worldmusic collection too.

On my signature is a link to my website. At the bottom of the home page is a hyperlink for a demo song named Llevarte Conmigo from this band I'm in. It was a one-take recording (with mistakes and everything ) except for an overdubed floortom. I'm doing all the percussion and friend of mine is on drumset.

I just recently played a gig on drumset with Andy Narell at a local community college. One of the tunes he had was based on a rhythm called mazuka, some 3/4 european based dance spiced up with afro-caribbean rhythmic sensibility. The percussionist and I NEVER got to the point where we heard the tune in 3, only in certain sections, i pretty much felt it in 6/8 the whole way, and it was very challenging to get it to groove. I'm sure aside from zouk and the compas and things we hear out of haiti there's a lot of really cool stuff happening in the french caribbean.

Hola Danny,

I don't know how much legit you want to be with those Zouk conga patterns, but give a try Bomba Sicá and even some Merengue apambichao patterns they will blend very nicely with the Zouk.

Hey Dannydrumperc, This post is crazy late but here goes...Gage Avril writes alot of ethnomusicological stuff on Haiti that may have some rhythms notated in it. The only other book I've seen with konpa notation in it was "Zouk: World Music in the West Indies"(Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology)
by Jocelyne Guilbault . This book has some great history in it and even comes with a CD! As for listening to konpa stuff, Johnny Congas Magnum band was a good recomendation. Here's some other good konpa listening: old Tabou Combo (70's and early 80's), Coupe Cloue (older stuff), Orchestre Tropicana (anything), Djakout Mizik, and Mizik Mizik. Hope this helps.
