Songalo,

That is really spooky, I was going to post the same question. Saturday last, I played with a Columbian band, playing mainly Son and Merengue, which I am comfortable with, but they threw in a few Cumbias, and I was busking big time.
If you look on the main Congaplace website, there are some, but I would also be interested in some shared 2 and 3 drum patterns, brothers.

That is correct- I like to simplifly and on the high drum use my left hand for all basses and my right hand for the opens- There are a lot of variations you can put on the tumba- For example you can put an open on the tumba on the 3 a touch on the 3& on the conga for time keeping and then the 2 opens on the tumba on the 4 and 4&.

You can also put opens on the tumba at the beggining of the pattern instead of the basses on the conga( on the 1,2)

You can also put rolls on the tumba at the beggining of cumbia while still getting that open note on the 1&, 2& on the conga-
My advice once you have the basic pattern, listen to a Joe Arroyo, Sonora Carruseles, Niche cd with cumbia, and it is real easy to pick up more variations. Even some Cubanos like Issac Delgado or Manolito y su Trabuco- they mix in a little cumbia with nice variations.

From what I have learned and seen, the folkloric style is played with 2 players one on each drum-where the high drum does the basic bass open bass open, and the lower drum plays the variations and rolls.
So if you were to play with 3 drums, I would replace the last open on the high drum onto the 3rd drum-The pattern is on 2 adding 3 will give different melodies.

Saludos to the brothers,in this subject I havw the opportunity to learn all the affairs when playing with a Colobian Band,(Foncho Castellar), and beside the patterns already show about I observed ans incorporate some articulations which were performed by the other congeros of the Colombian Bands with which we were sharing the stage,(beside the individual styles). for the genre like,Cumbia,Cumbion,Gaita,Porro,Merecumbe, etc.,(which I find out is called generally Cumbia)....One of the most generic pattern is played at the begining with an slap followed by a tone,( when the Timbalero is performing a peculiar percussion riff), and also an off/beat pattern which is played with the Conga, and doing an interactive riff with the Tumba...Then in the 'mambo parts' a basic tumbao which was taking from the Salsa/Style.Dr. Zaragemca

It's 1and 2and 3and 4eand...that is how it is counted out...not 1e+a.etc....the tones are on the "up-beats"...."JC" Johnny Conga... :D

Correct!

In the traditional folkloric Cumbia format you have the high drum known as the "Llamador" marking the time, and the low drum known as the "Alegre" improvising.

But that beat is off/beat in relation of the time signature, is not on the strong beat.,(usully marking the 2 and 4 of the signature).Dr. Zaragemca

For traditional folkloric Cumbia check out anything by Toto-La Momposina or Petrona.

Colombian percussionist Diego Gale has a very nice instructional DVD titled, "Percusivo", in which he demonstrate how to incorporate many of this Colombian rhythms using a contemporary salsa orchestra instrumentation.

Hope this helps!

Check out the mapale rythm with the Tambor Alegre( below next to the surdo), and la caja in Ballenato. I will see If I can come up with some clips. The folkloric is the shit.

Olsongo,

That's a beautiful drum!

Are those the artisan initials on the drum or yours?
