Berimbau,
I'm in way over my head here, but I have heard more about modern Brazilians traveling to Nigeria than I have heard about modern Cubans traveling to Nigeria. I know that Regino Jimenez and Jesus Perez traveled to Nigeria where they met the top bata priest, but I have not heard of any other instances other than William Bascom's mention in his article "The Yoruba in Cuba" (I'm very frustrated at the moment because I can't find my copy!). In his 1950 article, Bascom stated that he met Cubans travelling in Nigeria who spoke no English, yet could get around freely due to their grasp of Yoruba. He also identified some top bataleros in Cuba at the time who spoke fluent Lucumi. As soon as I find the article, I'll quote Basom directly. I've been looking on-line for the article as well as any mention of Patty Hagen (the Yoruba/Lucumi scholar). No luck so far.:(

I know friends who have had akpwons thoroughly translate Lucumi songs word-by-word, line-by-line. However, I would imagine that there could be some dispute as to just how "fluent" these Cuban Lucumi speakers are.

David,
The transatlantic trade between Nigeria and Brasil never really stopped, with goods and ideas flowing back and forth up to this moment. I'm a bit surprised that more Cubans aren't making the trek to Nigeria. Economic reasons/visa problems?
Now I'm fairly certain that many Cuban Akpwons ARE fluent in Lucumi, and my coments were limited to the rank and file of casual atendees at bembe, condemble, etc. Like myself they may have memorized the words but.............you know.
My sympathies on your missing Bascom. ALL of mine are missing too. I think Imanja has them!!!

Saludos,

Berimbau,
Thanks for clarifying. I'm with you. The akpwons are the special carriers of the song liturgy. When one of the elders die, it's a big loss.

Yemaya can be the devouring Mother sometimes. I cannot imagine being in the same situation.

I think it's a little more difficult for Cubans to travel, both for economic and political reasons.

When Cubans were allowed to travel to Africa as "military advisors" it would be interesting to know of any cultural exchange between the Angolans and Cubans during the Angolan war. Wonder if any of the Cuban soldiers were Paleros? How did the Cubans react to the Angolan music? Anyone know?

Interestingly, I haven't heard any anecdotal stories of cultural exchanges resulting from Cuba's involvement in various African civil wars of the 80's. I've always imagined that there must be some interesting stories out there.

Hello fellow forum folks,
It appears that someone is deleting Zaragemca's posts without his permission. His latest post inquiring as to who is doing this just disappeared. ???

I don't think this is the work of the moderator, because the moderator would have answered Zaragemca's question. Is someone taking it upon themselves to be a "guerilla post deleter"? if so, then I think we have a problem in this forum. No one should have their posts messed with. The rest of us can either respond or ignore posts that upset us.

What's going on?

At first I thought it was my error when posting, but I have also noticed several of my posts missing or deleted, along with other posts I had once seen from other members in other threads.
Seems we may have a bug in the software or someone hacking.

I will bring it up with the Administrator.

Thanks Abakua,
Were the posts of yours that were deleted special in any way due to their content? At first I thought Zaragemca deleted them himself because he thought the better of it and realized they were lame posts. After reading his now deleted question, I've suspected that someone else took offense at them and somehow managed to delete them.

HA!!!! like that would happen!!

Na, nothing special or offensive, just some of my general posts here and there that I cant seem to find anymore, they were located in older threads.
Im led to believe its a bug in the software.

However, while on the topic, due to recent new members joining and posting crap/profanity and insulting several members on here both on threads and in private message (myself included), the Admin Team will be removing posts if they are found to be useless to the thread, profane, offensive or not related to topic. Subsequent repetition of the same from a user and they will be warned, if it continues, they will be removed permanantly.

"useless to the thread" "not related to topic"

Could the Admin Team possibly find that some of Zaragemca's posts fall under those catagories?

If judging by the majority of his past posts, then possibly yes.

However, does not explain other members posts (including mine) which are no longer on the boards.

Now Dr. Z and I have often disagreed, but if someone is censoring his posts for THAT reason, they need to stop right now!!! In an open forum such as this, it needs to remain OPEN!!! ANYONE the moderator deletes for using obscene, racist, or sexist language, threats, etc, that I can understand. But for NO other reason should aomeone's posts be blocked. Remember what DeChardin said, "You haven't converted a man because you silenced him."
I look forward to his posts whether I like them or not. So please Dr. Z, make all the noise you want!!!!

Saludos,

That's not the point becouse I have never been showed how on in what way what I said could not be used for some members,or it is good for people to have a misconception, misundertanding, misinformation and take it to everybody else.Dr. Zaragemca
