I got to see Anga play with the Afro Cuban All Stars at Powell Hall in St. Louis some years ago. INSANE, his playing, his solo on "Gandinga, mondongo y sandunga" was...I was speechless. After the show I was walking to my car and passed Anga, Carlos Gonzales, and Amadito Valdes chillin' in the cool night air on the side of the hall. All I could muster was "muey bueno"(as I speak very little Spanish) but it was still a high point for me. I am jealous, I know you will enjoy!

FYI...for you all in N. Cal..dates added for Oakland and Santa Cruz. I've mentioned this before, but be sure to check out the CD "Cachaito": Armando Lopez on Bass, Anga on...well Congas. It's got some stripped down tunes w/ Bass and Congas in the front. Also there is a number w/ a DJ, kinda like on Angas' video.

PS me thinks Anga still plays sitting down :)

PSS CaptQuinto, Ozomatli is cool!!! Have you ever checked out Quetzal? Another East L.A. band that is awesome. One of there percussionists is this Brazillian cat.

Hey Pidoca,

That's great, mate! Unfortunately I won't be able to make it when Anga is playing in Perth... I am in Africa in the same period. But I will have a mate who is going to take his video camera there... yes we are allowed to shoot video @ the venue, :)! It will be awesome to see Anga play! Share your pics and if the video works out I will share the movie!

All the best and happy drumming,

Steady Freddy

Greetings all,
Had a great night hangin out (and a little partying too) with the guys from Omar Sosa Trio (Abakua - with your mate Delman). They are all great guys and very humble too.
A dream come true to finally meet one of my percussion heros, Miguel 'Anga' Diaz.
They are playing tonight (in about 1.5 hours time) - I can't wait! It's going to be awesome. Hopefully post some pics later...

cheers

Great stuff Pavlo! Please do post up your pics!!!
I bet Delman was over the moon!

They are playing tonight (Friday) in Sydney, Im going in with the sound engineer to assist in sound check, I will also post up some pics. :)

I cant wait to finally meet my all time favourite master conguero. So many years of listening to him on recordings, seeing him on video/dvd footage, studying him, taking lessons with one of his long time students... the day finally has come, Im more excited than a kid waiting up for Christmas morning.

I hope he is up for a mean rumba after the gig!

Hey Abakua,
Delman was pretty stoked too. We made them all very welcome here with a party in their honour. We put on a great spread of food, drinks and just relaxing and hangin out at a friends beautiful home.

Last nights show was awesome (it sold out days ago - some friends were sorry they didn't take my advice and get tickets weeks ago).

Omar Sosa is a genius on the piano man. Without doubt one of the absolute best musical experiences and definitely the best live latin jazz I have ever witnessed.

Anga had quite a set up - played seated on a cajon with 5 congas, bass drum, timbales, floor toms, snare, hi hat, 2 foot pedals, bells and numerous cymbals. Somehow he plays them all with mastery and finesse and makes it look easy.

They recieved a standing ovation and people wouldn't stop clapping, stomping and cheering until they came out to play one more time.

Abakua you've got all that to come this weekend! Enjoy! :D

cheers
Pavlo
