Hi all!
Nice thread! Very nice to hear about other interests!
I also used to be a fishing nut, a real fanatic, eventually ultra-light spin tackle in salt water became my fishing of choice. I loved eating them, too. Nowadays I hardly fish at all, but am still (always was/will be) a nature lover and spend time hiking when I can. I'm kind of a fauna encyclopedia and am familiar with most every bird, mammal and reptile species here in Israel and also in the US. Here in Israel there are six species of eagle alone, six species of wildcat, leopards (but almost gone now), wolves, hyenas, jackals, tons of wild boar (they get huge), 32 species of bat(!) and loads of other species I didn't know were here before I moved here. I had thought this place was all built up before I came, and it's getting there, but found to my pleasant surprise that there is lots of wilderness for a tiny country. When I walk in my area I often find prehistoric flint tools and have made a beautiful collection. I have given some of these, and some other kinds of stones I polish myself, to family and lady loves.
When I was in my late teens and early twenties I was heavy into amateur boxing, (flyweight, but I was nuts, would box anyone) for five years. I had super speed and very, very "heavy" hands for flyweight (so I was told). Was lined up to compete in the "Empire State Games" (NY) in 1982, but got accepted to the Peace Corps around the same time and had to choose one or the other. Opted for the Peace Corps. Good thing I left boxing. Was never kayoed or knocked down, but was stopped in one bout and if I get a bad, stuffy cold (hardly ever) I do feel worse in my left temple (where I took the hard blows). Benefits I could say I got from boxing were strength and confidence. Was never afraid to go onstage to play music after the boxing! (Recording is another story - mine come nowhere near my live playing). Something I liked in boxing was that in a way it stripped all the macho bull from sport - it is pure competition, no room for bull, no need for pose - and I found the camaraderie among boxers outside the ring to be the truest among all sports I partook in. I guess we took out all the tension in the ring!
I must admit that now, apart from music, my main "hobby" is being in love. Nah, that's no hobby. Even though I'm divorced, I do think love and marraige can last forever if you find the right mate. I was married 11 years, have two beautiful girls, Ilana and Leah, who I'm very close with. We just spent a wonderful couple of weeks together, they're on summer break from school. We usually meet weekly and speak on the phone daily. The older one, Ilana, is already quite a drummer, singer, guitarist, and artist. Same for Leah, but she likes violin more than drums.
Now I'm with a beautiful new lady and so far all is great, we are amazingly compatible in every way. A life-long partner is what I seek. Without pushing for it (cause that never worked for me), this is what I hope for.
I figure I'll have plenty of time to sleep alone when I'm dead. But I hardly sleep alone at all now, so I'm pretty happy.
I have plenty of other interests, but am so in love now and into the music that there's time for little else at the moment. Fine by me. All the best,
Yoni
