It's good to have a friend like that he is an inspiration .We all need to be inspired.
Tonight I was playing for our church vbs and noticed this one kid who is in a wheel chair and cannot speak . I gave him a maraca so he could make some sound while the other kids sang.Well this kid loved it he had the biggest smile. That was cool!
Happy drumming

I have a home studio where I compose and record original music ranging from ambient to rock to drum ‘n bass to world/electronic fusion. I hope to combine my compositions with my drumming skills and form a band in the future that would perform electronically spiced, ethnically influenced dance music at clubs and discos.
I also love nature and the outdoors, and go hiking and camping and swimming in ponds. I like to ski and snowboard, and I coach a women’s basketball team. Occasionally I like doing nothing at all. Just lazying away a day in the sun with a twelve pack and a couple doobs.
I also dream of my own garden with a greenhouse, where I could grow all things green and spicy ; ))

Obviously I do the usual stuff, like go to the movies, play pool in bars and go to cool gigs.
I drum, therefore I am!

Hey guys,
my mate Abakua from Sydney tells me that I should put more posts on and be less of a forum stalker, haha!
So besides playing my drums at home or with my bands, I work as a web/graphic designer, I do the traditional martial art of Rhee Tae Kwon Do, I am a licenced junior soccer coach, I coach my son's team and train them twice a week besides the Sunday game and I am always busy with my family! Taxi driving my two daughters from one event to the next. Conducting drumcircles, drumworkshops and teaching at Perth's the Drumshop Drum Academy. So yes, never a boring moment and loving it!

Peace and Happy Drumming

Below is a shot of the engine in progress, we are hoping to make approx 290kw at the wheels (389HP at the wheels) and looking for a low 12 second or high 11 second quarter mile time out of it. The car is a 1992 Nissan 180sx twin cam 2.0L turbo 4 cyl. (in the States I believe they are imported as a 240sx but with a 2.4L non turbo engine) The car will be primarily a daily driver but also used for legal racing competitions, both circuit and quarter mile and drifting.

Hey Abakua,

I just came accross this thread... I am a beginner at the "street custom" era... In the past I use to tell myself i would never invest in a brand new vehicle... I use to own several old skool american muscle cars... I have not yet grown out of that stage, but no longer own any of my cars in the past... I have since purchased a brand spaken new Mazda 3 5door (hatchback of course!) It's a great car for lugging my equipment around...

I am now looking at some performance upgrades... As with old skool rides, I assume to always start from the inside and then work your way out. With that in mind, I am thinking of upgrading my intake but am not sure which brand of after market intakes are best... Maybe we could talk offline about this as I have several questions... Send me your email so you can possibly give me some advise on what to get, etc...

Hi All,
Besides Congas & Bongos, I've also been studying &
performing the music of Yemen & Oman. Its
Afro-Arabian music and they have every size, shape & sound of drum you can imagine. I attended an Omani
festival in DC over the weekend that had 100 musicians,
singers & dancers. If you like percussion - each band had
at least 5 drummers!! and a lot of 6/8 tempos. I ended up
joining them for a jam before it ended,
I'm also into Indian cookery and enjoy mixing the spices and making it all - although I'm not a vegetarian most
of the food is. (by the way its not all curry) I enjoy swimming...
I smoke some good cigars ocassionaly,
a habit I picked up in Havana on a visit 16 years ago. I'm
am a husband and parent to two girls - so I like to hang
with the family as much as possible. I have a degree in
Visual Art and computer graphics and like to do painting and small video projects with my 16 year old daughter.
J.C. I also saw a UFO in Canada in 1968! I was in
6th grade. Let's talk...
This was a nice thread to get to know each other.
Abakua I really dig your statuette collection.

Hi all!

Nice thread! Very nice to hear about other interests!
I also used to be a fishing nut, a real fanatic, eventually ultra-light spin tackle in salt water became my fishing of choice. I loved eating them, too. Nowadays I hardly fish at all, but am still (always was/will be) a nature lover and spend time hiking when I can. I'm kind of a fauna encyclopedia and am familiar with most every bird, mammal and reptile species here in Israel and also in the US. Here in Israel there are six species of eagle alone, six species of wildcat, leopards (but almost gone now), wolves, hyenas, jackals, tons of wild boar (they get huge), 32 species of bat(!) and loads of other species I didn't know were here before I moved here. I had thought this place was all built up before I came, and it's getting there, but found to my pleasant surprise that there is lots of wilderness for a tiny country. When I walk in my area I often find prehistoric flint tools and have made a beautiful collection. I have given some of these, and some other kinds of stones I polish myself, to family and lady loves.

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I was heavy into amateur boxing, (flyweight, but I was nuts, would box anyone) for five years. I had super speed and very, very "heavy" hands for flyweight (so I was told). Was lined up to compete in the "Empire State Games" (NY) in 1982, but got accepted to the Peace Corps around the same time and had to choose one or the other. Opted for the Peace Corps. Good thing I left boxing. Was never kayoed or knocked down, but was stopped in one bout and if I get a bad, stuffy cold (hardly ever) I do feel worse in my left temple (where I took the hard blows). Benefits I could say I got from boxing were strength and confidence. Was never afraid to go onstage to play music after the boxing! (Recording is another story - mine come nowhere near my live playing). Something I liked in boxing was that in a way it stripped all the macho bull from sport - it is pure competition, no room for bull, no need for pose - and I found the camaraderie among boxers outside the ring to be the truest among all sports I partook in. I guess we took out all the tension in the ring!

I must admit that now, apart from music, my main "hobby" is being in love. Nah, that's no hobby. Even though I'm divorced, I do think love and marraige can last forever if you find the right mate. I was married 11 years, have two beautiful girls, Ilana and Leah, who I'm very close with. We just spent a wonderful couple of weeks together, they're on summer break from school. We usually meet weekly and speak on the phone daily. The older one, Ilana, is already quite a drummer, singer, guitarist, and artist. Same for Leah, but she likes violin more than drums.

Now I'm with a beautiful new lady and so far all is great, we are amazingly compatible in every way. A life-long partner is what I seek. Without pushing for it (cause that never worked for me), this is what I hope for.
I figure I'll have plenty of time to sleep alone when I'm dead. But I hardly sleep alone at all now, so I'm pretty happy.

I have plenty of other interests, but am so in love now and into the music that there's time for little else at the moment. Fine by me. All the best,

Yoni

Yoni, Good to hear your story. I really got my start drumming & performing while living in Israel from 1977-1980. There were a lot of latin and south american students there at that time and I got to learn some of the Yemenite music. I was also always checking out all the music in the neighboring countries on my shortwave. I'm regulary working with some Yemeni musicians now getting to play some exciting rhythms. I have great memories of my many hikes near Ein Gedi. I hope to come back on day and hopefully hang out and drum together.

Hi Isaac, hi Johnny!

Isaac, I also hiked alot around En Gedi - you've probably been to the neighboring river valley, Nahal Arugot, long, winding and beautiful. I love that part of Israel, hot all year and with a feeling like prehistoric Africa or something. I hope you get out here again and we can jam. It's been too long since I've been back to NYC to see family there. If/when I can get back to visit I'll look you up in New Jersey!

Johnny, I haven't heard of Joshua Sasson but may know some who worked with him. I was in a Samba band in Jerusalem at that time ("Macumba") and later on some of those players moved to Tel Aviv where there was more work in Salsa. There was one club for years in the Tel Aviv port called Coco Loco which used to host local and foreign Salsa bands, but I hear they closed down. There is Latin and South American immigration still and probably some Latin bands in Tel Aviv that Pini might know more about than me. One guy who's been here for years, Yehuda (Julio) Glantz, is well known in Buenos Aires, and does his own Latin/Jazz material. A few years back he took me on tour with him there and to Montevideo, Uruguay. That was a blast. The live music scene in general has been in a slump here the past few years but seems to be slowly picking up again.

All the best,
Yoni

I love the martial Arts.... Especially Brazilian JuJitsu and Mixed Martial Arts...Event's I love to watch are the Pride FC from Japan. if anyone has ever seen these guys fight you know what I'm talking about. Mixing Boxing, Wrestling, Submission Techniques and Good ol kicks. Now you might think fighting is violent, well you are right, Fighting is violent. But in a controled environment, it's two guys giving their skill and technique the best shot and it's full of adrenaline.
Other hobbies are Le Parkour or free running. This is using the city as your playground....
