I'm trying to get as much life as possible out of my drum heads. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for what to use on the heads. I've heard everything from almond oil to straight lanolin. I was hoping someone would have a specific lotion that they could recommend that would be easy for me to purchase.
First of all you might need to clean the skin (cold water is essential, maybe a brush and a sponge, otherwise a piece of cloth might do).
As to reconditioning: Everybody has got his own little secret potions & stuff, I have used pure shea butter (without any perfume additives) successfully, but lanolin, lanolin, palm oil and the like might do the trick perfectly as well.
So basically remove the skins (something I've been wanting to do anyways to rotate the bongos), cold water and a cloth/brush to get any gunk off, and shea butter? I've used pure lanolin but I don't feel it gets absorbed by the head very well and it leaves a tacky feel for a while.

Since I've replaced my conga heads with mules, they are a different instrument. I am a huge proponent of mules, and cant think to play on anything else. Replacing the heads and going through the process was a great experience.
