SHOW YOUR MOST RARE / UNUSUAL CONGAS

Postby Omelenko1 » Wed May 22, 2013 1:48 am

My most rare set of congas are my 1974 Timbas Ismael, made by Ismael Ramos in Bayamon, PR. I'm the second owner, the original owner, Roberto, had them custom made with a Topical scene on the wood. According to Roberto, Ismael took 6 months to make them. I had them professional restored by the best and had the crowns rechromed. The rest of the hardware is all stainless steel. Just put 2 new cals heads on them, this set would last another 40 yrs., as they are like new.

My other rare set, 3 Skin on Skin cherry wood 1992. What's really rare about this set is that the quinto 11" and the conga 12" both have 6 lugs. Jay only makes quintos and congas with 5 lugs, these 2 have 6 lugs. The 13" tumba has 6 lugs and that's the only drum that takes 6 lugs from Jay.

I looooove them cherry SOS's, awesome drums. Interesting re the lugs...
I had my Cuban solid shells made with 7 lugs on both the mach and hembra a la old school Cuban trad.

Now.... a fiberskyn on that SOS masterpiece??  Dario....

2 piece Gon Bops quinto, early 70's. Mahogany with gel coating. Has 2 inlay bands - never saw another inlay on a GB mahogany. Fits well in the boot of an old MG or a TR3. Pretty sure this is a one of a kind special-order.

That's a very unique drum you have there.
Quite innovative, I would think it makes the
drum easier to lug around.

Here are my friend's Martin (RIP) customized Vergara. The quinto was Patato's and the conga was Mongo's. Hand painted by a Hatian artist here in Miami. This trio sounds wicket. Now belong to his son.

This is my refurbished Junior 10 inch Re-Quinto ...it is now 46 years old ...I got it in a pawn shop in the South Bronx on Willis ave. for 50 bucks....back in 1972...it was fire engine red when i got it ..Martin Galagarza is the one who refurbished it to the way it looks today...I have been offered up to 500 dollars for it...also not everyone can play on it..it does have a 10 inch head...and the bass on it is to be heard to be believed...ooooooooom....this is a 'rare' drum today....
