2 awesome groups on that video clip. I had not heard of the first group, Aguri Yo, how recent is the recording?
The second group, in the train station, looks like members of Afrocuba de Matanzas many years ago, probably in the 60s. You can see Regalao on quinto, looking really young, maybe in his teens or early 20s, looks like Delores Perez dancing. The lead singer sounds like Enrique Mesa. Anyone know for sure?

Yes Jorge, that is Afrocuba de Matanzas, just a beautiful scene. I'm pretty sure that's Francisco Zamora "Minini" on lead vocals.

Not sure about the Aguiri Yo part but the ACdM part is originally from an old documentary called "La Rumba" - saw it once a few years ago at Anthology Film Archives. This clip was taken from the documentary "Cubanissimo"

Apparently Aguiri Yo is still around, if anyone is going to be in Havana in a few weeks, check them out :

"- Rumbeando.
Aguiri Yo es la destacada agrupación que nos brindara un viaje por nuestras raíces africanas, Casa de Cultura Unión Fraternal, Revillagigedo y Gloria, viernes 25, 08:00PM"

saludos!

Hi Guarachon,
Yeah, listening again, I think you are right about Minini singing. I wonder if any more of that Afrocuba video is available, what a classic performance and a 1 minute clip is too short!

Jorge,

In the original movie, as I recall, the train station scene was also edited.

BTW, I meant to ask you, where might I find examples of Enrique Mesa singing?

thanks

Guarachon,
Enrique Mesa (Ibae) had a very distinctive voice in live performances, I only know of a few recordings with him singing lead. He sings the second half (starting with Ñongo...) of the Abakua song on the Afrocuba CD Raices Africanas. On the same CD, he also sings the solo part of the guaguanco Enigue Nigue, after the duo with Minini. I had the privelege of hearing him sing and play several times at workshops and performances Afrocuba gave in NYC in 1998 and 2000.
He also sings in the Matanzas part of the Abakua recordings that are the last CD in the recently released Antologia de la Musica Afrocubana CD set, you will recognize his voice.
Enrique was a great drummer and teacher, may he rest in peace.
Jorge

Ah yes of course, I'm ashamed to have forgotten. Great, great singer. I have some good video of him from the Painted Bride performance in Philadelphia. I am trying to get the equipment together to convert to mpeg and put up on the site.

I do have a hard to find recording of him singing the inspirations on "Tristes Lamentos" from a compilation. Do you have that?

Jorge, I was trying out this streaming method I use on my blog, see if it works here. Seems to work for me:

Guarachon,
The streaming method works fine for me too. Thanks. Enrique sounds great on that recording, and Sandy Perez plays a nice quinto, you can hear Regalao's influence in spots. What compilation is that from? I don't have that one and had not heard that song.

Yeah the quinto is beautiful. The harmonies are beautiful, Minini with Virulilla. The décima is beautiful... *sigh* :)

It is from some compilation, like World Music Vol 30 Cuba or something like that, there is one other rumba track, again by ACdM, "Palo Yaya" done as a batarumba with Dolores Pérez singing, I will see if I can dig that up.

You can download the file by right-clicking on this link:
