New to me, likely not new to many of you. I I like how chill and relaxed he is, great efficiency of movement - but that man is rippin'!

Eliel is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Love his technique, make it look easy almost
effortless.

So efficient that his shoulders hardly move at all! Seems like the rest of the rhythm section could have cut out during his solo, almost detracted rather than centered it. Sensed that his clave was sharper than theirs, even during the solo. This guy walks on water.

I have studied Eliel.way of playing,.i have been playing the way(physically) he plays for years..from the wrists, not the shoulders or elbows...he literally is 'meditating' on the drums...control your breathing and total relaxation...a lot of guys still 'gorilla' the drum as we used to say...arms flailing all over the place, and they get tired sooner .or there hands get beat up from poor technique..he has learned to 'pace' himself on the drum...forget his stamina, its off the charts.. I just turned 65 and have now been playing for 50 years on the drum..I know like Eliel how to 'live' with the drum and how to work on it..how many out there today will still be playing even in 25 years from now on the drum?...He is the 'new generation' of Player, Eliel, Pedrito, Jose Febres, and a few others are the way to go today...but please don't give up on 'tradition' and the 'roots of rhythms'..

Lot of cats hit hard and play that way until the day they die, Mongo being one of them, Ray was a hard hitter too, I've seen videos of francisco really going at it as well, probably todays miking and of course the study they do in cuba where they combine the classical snare drum pedagogy with the conga has definitely influenced today's drummers. Here's a cat who's technique I really like, talk about all wrist! Dude's got like marching snare chops. Fast and clean and you rarely see his arms move much unless it's lateral motion.

Wow, no kidding that's blinding speed! true, the arms aren't doing much, and it's all wrist,, but look at how the elbows are bowed out. That causes tension in the neck. Lots of people do play with their elbows out like Mike Spiro, most djembe players, and maybe even Giovanni H. But, I know from getting my neck completely frozen up when I was learning and practicing hard all day for many days in a row, what that can do to your upper traps and neck muscles. Eliel on the other hand has his elbows in line with his hands and shoulders. This causes 0 tension.
When my neck was frozen, they took an x-ray and it had lost the curve it's supposed have, and after advice from a fellow player who also knew something of anatomy, a change of elbow angle to straighter in line with the shoulders took care of it.
I realize this guy can play circles around me, and I'm still criticizing his technique. That might get some members hot, so, please know it's just my lame opinion.

In this clip I do a short conga solo with a 12-13 piece local project I also work with. Line up is 3 trombones, Bass, Piano, Tres, Violin, Timbal, Congas, Bongo/Bell, 3 vox.
The clip is public so you dont need a fbook acc to check it out. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151876642089468

Check this band out, they sound great.
It appears that they are fairly new as a group, playing in the Los Angeles area. Im familiar with the bass player Rene Camacho who plays with many of the local Latin Jazz bands including Poncho Sanchez.
Check out the percussionist Christian Moraga, he does a great job in playing the congas, cow bell and snare all at the same time.
