I'm likin' this link! I've played a lot of djembe with west African guys over the years. I find the technique used here quite entertaining, the 7/8 thing had me guessing a bit as well. I really like the grey beard guy with the toque within the architectural design and setting - must have been below 20 degrees c. Were those suspenders he had on (nope - looked closer, it's a scarf)? Then rippin on that traditional drum – just great!

Temperature wasn't too cold, by U.S./Europe standard, but no central heating in Israel and the wood stove was just getting fired up.

JC, I was at that Cuban All Stars descarga. Daniel was playing with my congas at the time, 3 Sanatamaria's made by Jose Garcia and a 4th SONOC that belonged to Araña. That was 88/89, I was at WDNA at the time and I took Mongo with me, everyone wanted Mongo to sit in but he declined.

Anyone know more about this guy? Seems I'm the last to know, just found this clip on youtube... Sound is distorted some and solo is kind of abstract, not a whole lot of rhythm, but I love it. What a slap and chops.

The musicianss have recorded this old number as some kind of a post-modernized Changüí, creating remarkable space and transparency by an uncompromising reference to contratiempo. No tradition sacrificed, in my opinion. The guys know their stuff.
