Hey Dr Z nice idea!
Would be interesting to hear the various tumbao styles through that time in the music. Best of luck with the project!

Welcome brother JC,..in the rules,it doesn't have to be a latin/jazz per se,only the musicians which were verse in both terms to be in a latin/jazz band and which could be able to play in the corresponding dates.,(believe or not there are a lot of them even in 1935).Dr. Zaragemca

Dr. Z, I presume you are doing it in Houston. Where are you planning on playing? the Red Cat? Are you re-creating Puente, Prado, Machito, etc or are you just playing in that style? As one of your former students, I would love to be a part of that ensemble (although I'm in Dallas now).
I 'm friends with a guy named Harry Shepherd (older fella) that plays awesome miramba/vibes. you should contact him. He used to play Jazz/big band at Birra Porettis (on W. Grey). Send me an email, we'll hook up soon.

so really you would be playing how these players would play as one, with a sound going back to 1935?

it would definitely be more jazz than latin at that era, if not exclusively straight ahead jazz

Am I understanding this right????

You are talking about forming imaginary pretend bands using musicians who were around in the 3 time periods which you listed?

I dont see the point? ???

okay kinda like, if you were to name an allstar band with players from 1935 who would play what? okay

so maybe for like 1955 i would have a latin jazz band like this:

Bass: Julio Andino Conga: Tata Guines Bongo: Jose Mangual Sr Timbal: Ubaldo Nieto, actually i would just pick THE MACHITO ORCHESTRA...is this what your talking about Zara...

My 1940's (40 /49) AfroCuban jazz imaginary band would be as follows:

Piano- Pedro Justiz (Peruchin),Bass- Israel Lopez (Cachao), Bongo'- Ramon "Mongo" Santamaria, Tumba- Luciano Pozo Gonzalez (Chano), Timbales- "El Chori", Trumpets- Alejandro "El Negro" Vivar, Felix Chapottin, Sax- Mario Bauza,Jose "Chombo" Silva.

This would have been a "dream team". Saludos, Dario :D
