I'm enjoying modern salsa, Rey Ruiz, tito Nieves,Marc Anthony and many others. I'm also listening to percussion work of Raul "lali" Gonzalez, Jose Pilar Suarez and the late Alejandro Publes. Yambu style, folkloric ensembles.

The photo on that CD cover, was shot in the 60's. I can tell by the clothes and overall look of the people and the apartment... There weren't that many Cuban's in the city at this time, mostly Puerto Ricans. The cubans were mostly in Union City New Jersey.....and still are...i could count the ones I know--Julito, Patato, Mongo, Monguito(el cantante) Justo Betancourt, Virgilio Marti,Arsenio,Chano Pozo, Machito, and Mario Bauza... and a few others that made there musical contribution to NYcity...."JC" Johnny Conga... :D

Hey JC,

It must have been a very exiting time, such innovation. More info and track listing..

Rey Roig's name constantly appears on compilations like this - his music is dynamite!

Honest Johns is a superb little record shop and label down the road from me in Notting Hill.

Yeah, that is still the "real" Irakere.

Actually, it would be nice to be in Spain at the moment. Paquito, Carlos, Bebo and Chucho etc. will meet for the first time in years in Paquito's 50th anniversary tour. Would be so great to hear them playing together...

Amigos Invicibles were here last January, they performed at a large festival here, they went ok for the first 2 or 3 tunes, but after that, it all sounds the same and monotenous, crowds were kinda bored with them fairly quickly...

Their whole blend of merengue with funk hip hop didnt go down too well here, even more so as they appeared 'very into' themselves, that whole 'love myself and look at me thing' dont go down too well here.

As for me, I didnt really get into it at all.

But hey, gustos son gustos, if you dig em, then thats all that matters. :) Different strokes for different folks.

I am a part time Dj so I listen, play and have good old classic SalSa and Guajiras or Son Montunos. The music has to be Danceable because is for the dancer and can not be Monga or the romantic type that have a pretty Boy singing who has no talent to sing or to improvise. For me it does not matter where the SalSa is comming from as long as it has the Flavor for the dancer. So I am a Salsaholic

Ohhhh ... sorry to here that !! ???

I haven't been around them personally, but would not care for that attitude either.

I saw Umphrey's Mcgee last night at the Orpheum Theatre. The
percussionist had 12 lines going out to the sound man as did the keyboard player.

Also ... a Yoda figure on stage with him!
