I scored at Amoeba Music yesterday...

Got Johnny Blas...........King Conga
and
John Santos.............Tribute to the Masters

4.99 each! Rock on!

Both are great, after the first couple listenings I am really digging
Johnny Blas, the congas are really featured and his trombone line up is really
fresh. I've got to get more of this cat!

No doubt the John Santos one is excellent as well.

Hey guys,
I'm listening to what I think is a great Afro-Cuban Jazz CD by one the pioneers and masters of multiple conga use. The CD is called Unico Y Diferente by none other than Carlos "Patato" Valdes. This was put out some time in 1999 I believe, on the Connector label. However, I believe this was recorded long before that time but didn't see the light of day until then.

This is a great blend of Jazz and Latin. Many people do not realize but Patato is one of the key figures for doing stuff on multiple congas in a Jazz setting. This man has helped pave the way for what we now know as Latin Jazz of Afro-Cuban Jazz. Highly recommended.

Principally yes, it´s a really good album. The only thing that bothered me is that the horns are at times completely out of key!!! or do they call that dropped tuning? :p
But Patato is a unique conga player indeed which is why I enjoyed "Unico Y Diferente" pretty much!

Heard some of the early Rolling Stones stuff on the radio today, the tunes with the conga's. Sounded good! I keep telling myself to dig that CD out of the "listening library" and listen to it once in a while...

Been listening/studying alot of Osvaldo Chacon's repertoire.
Great stuff.. The track "Mi Vicio" is my fave.
I am playing in the band on his Australian tour later this month/early next month.

Tito Puente's "Top Percussion" & "In Session". Top Percussion & Mongo's "Afro Roots" are two recordings that no conguero, novice or pro, should be without.
