Nice work BNB!!
Did you use plastic or glass beads? It takes a while to get it together.
Ever try making caxixi? Those are fun too. but I never found the good flat reed that didn't split even after a good soaking.
There is a gourd farm close (about 1hr away) which I used go frequent for gourds. I used to really get into making shekere's guiro etc etc.
I'll post a few pics when I get a chance of my creations.

Please do, yeah, gonna make a guiro next and then that bamboo thing you play palito on, is it called a palito or a caja?

I used plastic pony beads, they are super inexpensive.

I used plastic pony, and on another one I used glass. The glass one is alot sharper in sound
I tried making a guiro, but I suppose I didn't have the right tool to cut the salts. Its OK, but the slats were not close enough.

Bamboo : CATA. I made a test run on a 2"diameter scrap piece which turned ok. Now to buy some 5" stock.

bongosnotbombs, that's a beautiful shekere. And a nice size one too, which seem to be very hard to come by in this neck of the woods. Can just imagine the sounds it produces. Anyone have a preference for plastic, wood, or glass beads? I was told that wood beads don't break as easily. Anyone have experience with wood beads?

Heres me stuff. white is plastic pony. red/black is glass. Guiro ad cata, caxixi. I got the gourds from Welbourne Gourd Farm in Fallbrook back in mid 90's. I had about 20 or so gourds ranging from big ones 9-12" to long ones for guiros. Had to atcually throw some out due to space reasons and genreal clean up.

Tonio,
those shekeres look great, from a different species of gourd than mine I think, or did you trim the neck closer to the body? I left mine wide at the top for a kind of handle...
it looks like a nice selection of drums there too, 2 valje congas, valje bongos and matt smith ritmo bongos as well? Sweet.
Did you make the cata and guiro too? Those are next on my list, then maybe claves? who knows maybe a bell in future? can't be too hard to weld a bell...peace all!.................................G!

1st shekere I made had a big top portion and wide neck.
It actually made it hard to play accurately so opted for for a narrow neck, plus it helps in projecting the tone of the gourd nicely.
NO bongos are LP Valje and LP Gen II.
Guiros and cata and caxixi, all hand made.

I'd like to see your hand made claves/cowbells, claves shouldn't be too hard. I don't have much experience will metal. Go for it !!

This was a gift to me couple of years back by percussionist and Bay area resident Mary Brassell.

Maybe some of you forum members from that area know her?

Excellent chekere!!!

Here is a Caxixi I made from phone line wire. :D

Made it especially for my berimbau, the gourd base gives it the sound.

Please do. It looks like a good size gourd..

I figured I used ove 1,200 beads on mine. Pony beads are cheap though.
It was a really rewarding project.
