Ritchie Flores, aged 12 or 14... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqvvDsh99jw

circa 1990 - Changuito, descargando con NG La Banda. Cuba. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLJ2_xptDZ8
(Changuito jam with NG La Banda for the non Latino)

1991. Tata Guines hosting workshop/clinic & interview in France with Cuban Music historian & ethnomusicologist Olavo Alen Rodriguez.

Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivlfKbJb70g

1977 - Rare clear footage of the legendary conguero Jorge 'El Niño' Alfonso, performing with Irakere. El Niño was the first conguero in Cuba to play with 5 tumbadoras in a group ensemble. Upon his departure from Irakere, Anga subsequently entered the band. One of my first teachers also has some rare recordings of a conguero who worked and recorded with Irakere in between the time of El Niño & Anga. His name escapes me at this moment...

Anyway here is El Niño, performing with Irakere. A group so far ahead of its time.

another Irakere classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1TvtB0GoQ0 I actually perform this track with one of the bands I used to work with, and ocassionally fill in with. Less the 70's/80's style synths etc and with a harder hitting piano line, it still goess off hard when performed, I will try and upload some footage I have from a gig.

I've got to thank Abakua for posting all of these Irakere videos. To me this band embodies everything Latin Jazz should be. I can't get enough of Irakere. The congueros that were part of this band all through time were special in their own way and are what I aspire to sound like. God Bless Chucho Valdes for allowing all of his musicians to shine, especially his congueros.

A cool vid from the Montreal Jazz Fest.
The conguero is playing the Salsa Club model Mopercs.
Great sound quality - these drums are cracking!
The alto player plays a heck of a solo!

Wow Johnny ! I know the focus on this forum tends to be all things Cuban etc (which I love of course), but you have done some amazing shit in your time ! I love disco and have quite the collection, you've played with some of the biggest there has been. I have quite a Salsoul collection and I'm always amazed at some of the big Fania/Salsa names that you find on there too. What a fascinating career.

All the best,

Barrie

I thought you might dig that one NG. :D

Not a conga video but this kid is really cute and talented. She sings and plays clave.
Her parent have obviously taught her well.

Incredible! Sometimes as drummers I think we forget how imortant the dance is to the integrity of the music, many rumba drummers are excellent dancers as well.

So true, how dance and music are related. In my faith, the musician is a supposed to be important - because the musician is supposed to inspire the people to dance! :)

Anyway here is a clip that inspired one or 2 in the view only to speak on their cellphones... :)

And I don't do much in it at all at first.

BUT it heats up quite nicely toward the end.

Enjoy!

Here is another one, but on darbuka. It is from just a few weeks ago, part of a show from a concert tour in Europe I just did with Gypsy singer Ida Kelarova and the Jazz Famelija, to kick off our new CD "Aven Bachtale" ("Be Happy", in the Roma Gypsy language).

After about a minute and a half I get silly on my darbuka, talking with the set drummer.

Enjoy!

Yoni,
Great to see you playing, I enjoyed the very multicultural music, I even heard a clave-based phrase in there. Nice conversations back and forth between you and the others, in both clips. With some help from the low resolution YouTube video, you do remind me of your dad when you are playing, the same joy of expression we see in some of the best musicians. Good luck with your CD and Sigue Pa'lante!
Best regards,
George Friedman-Jimenez
