Hi everyone! I am getting ready to purchase a conga set and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a type that would help me get this sound (outside of practicing!)...
What you see in the video is a fine, now appr. 30-year-old LP fiberglass set with good skins, played by Eddie "Bongo" Brown, mixed in the 1970s´ sound, so it might be a bit delusive to think you can get precisely THAT sound out of a set of congas you just buy... LP´s present-day models offer a wide variety, and if you search on this forum you will find many alternatives that are very fine too.
Sorry Mike but that isn't Eddie "bongo" Brown from Philly...and Im sure of it...he was a light skinned brother and didnt have a beard..u can see his photo holding bongos with the MFSB records....the congas are "wood look" fiberblass LP's... I had the same set...back in 72..."JC" Johnny Conga
Sorry Mike after further research it seems that u are right about that photo.I stand corrected..I had him confused with Larry Washington from MSFB ...here is a photo of him holding his bongos with MFSB orch..70's...
yea i bought those "wood look" fiberglass off 42nd st NYCity at a record store, in 1972 for 268 bucks for the both of them..sweet!...."JC" Johnny Conga
Might be tough getting that old school sound but there are any number of congas that with good skins sound great. Depending on how much you want to spend: LP Classics,Pearl Elite,Matadors,Meinl,LP Galaxy wood congas,Toca traditionals. It will ultimately come down to preferences in looks, price and sound. And if you decide on a brand and model the used market is also great if gotten good deals on congas that were not cracked maybe not the prettiest but definitely playable right away.
