Great clips on You Tube of Afrocuba de Matanzas! Congadelica, thank you for the heads up. Anyone know when that concert at UPR Rio Piedras was?

Check out the columbia (parte 4) and the guaguanco (parte 3). Regalao and Sandy Perez are in top form on quinto. No paradiddles, no double stroke rolls, no mano secreta, nada de eso. Es puro sabor, nada mas y nada menos. Naldo and Pello talking on seis por ocho and tumbadora makes the sound, they keep the rhythm interesting but leave lots of space for the singers. Minini and Luisito sing really nice duo, reminiscent of Saldiguera and Virulilla. Eso si es la rumba. Chacho! We have a lot to learn from these masters.
After the rumbas, Sandy and Regalao are kicking in the first part of the batarumba (parte 5).
I hope the same members play on the DVDs, can't wait to get them, I ordered them a week ago.

Hola Jorge,

I believe this presentation @ UPR was part of their 1998 Dos Alas U.S. Tour along with Los Hermanos Cepeda.

Saludos,

Hi FOLKS,

Hope your are all well . Just wanted to post something about these 2 afrocuba dvds . They were made by a friend of mine Christian , from a company called latimbala based in England . He is very knowledgeable about the music and it shows in the production imho . Each dvd comes with a very informative booklet , giving detailed info and historical backround info on each style .The dvd " 50 years on " shows amazing performances of all the major afro cuban traditions including rare footage of iyesa drums , Bata , palo , arara etc . The camera focuses on the dance as well as the percussion showing things in there proper context . The energy in the Makuta sequence is incredible to see !
The other dvd is a recording of a rumba in havana. The first track is a Guaguanco in honour of Lazaro ros , with some superb quinto playing from different players throughout the dvd , this is a real masterclass in the tradition .We also get Yambu mantancero and Rumba Columbia , the Columbia features some of the most amazing dance captured on dvd . The real highlight of the dvd is the Batarumbas . There are 2 batarumba tracks towards the end , Laye and Caridad , that show how incredible Afrocuba de Mantanzas really are . Lots of stuff has come out of Cuba in the last few years on dvd , in my opinion this is one of the best quality productions to get released . For anyone with an interest in percussion or dance , these dvds are a must have . :D
