Hey, does anyone know if Gio's son, Ianmanuel Hidalgo, plays congas? Did he inherit his father's incredible prowess with the tumbadoras?

And speaking of Ianmanuel, what do you all think about the track titled, Ianmanuel, on his album, Villa Hidalgo with Dizzy and Paquito? Me, I think it's truly a musical masterpiece! Listening to that track makes me feel really good about being a conguero. Asta la proxima.

As far as I know, Ian is following in his fathers footsteps. As to what level of playing he is at, I have no idea however.
Gio's grandfather was a respected conguero, as was his father Meñengue and now Gio.

My wife and I will be having our first child this month. We are having a big baby boy named Santiago Tomas. My wife shot down naming the baby Mongo or Giovanni. I hope that I will be able to pass along to my son my love of the congas and percussion and that he will feel the joy and satisfaction that I feel when I play. Hopefully he will surpass his old man in skill and ability! He may never have the skill of Gio but that's OK I just hope he inherits the appreciation.

I know Ian Manuel....as far as I know, he doesn't play congas like his dad. I would have thought he'd be showcased in his shows if he did. He may play some basic stuff, but I don't think he's into the music scene like that. When I met him, he didn't give me the vibe that he was an up and coming percussionist like his fater.

Fiberbrand, I didn't know Gio was an up and comming percussinist :laugh: Just kidding with you, but its too bad the kid doesn't show the same enthusiasim as his dad. May be he wants to be a doctor.

Hi Fellow Congueros!

Yes, I have met Ian and have seen him play at a Gio clinic in Guitar Center Miami, FL. I must say the kid didn't seem enthusiastic about playing. Gio practically had convince him to get on stage and once on stage, it didn't seem he was really into it.
I hear he's a decent DJ though.
Then again, can you imagine the overdose of percussion and rumbas the kid has witnessed being the son of GIO? Whewww!

Fellas, God has blessed me 4 sons 12, 8, 5, 3 and number 5 on the way also a boy. And pretty much like seisporocho said there is a percussion overdose in my home. Out of all of them only the 8 yr and the 3 yr old show a genuine enthusiastic interest on the congas. I do however go over history, rhythms and techniques once a week with them and they certainly have an appreciation for the tumbadoras, gio mongo, barrette and others, and for the most part they enjoy jamming with me.
I cant force them to play or love the congas like I do but, I will teach them and they will learn to play, what happens with that knowledge as they start to become young adults is up to them. But I will kinda twist their arm, know what I mean. :;): LOL
