One of my favorites...

A gift from Bay area percussionist Mary Brassell.

These are the same shekeres that I have uploaded to my website:

The first single one is made from a gourd from the U.S. west coast, the triple set is made from Brazilian gourds. Plastic beads. All self-made.

Jorge: Mary Brassell makes wonderful shekeres! I have seen the one that you have before. Congratulations! If it sounds as great as it looks, top notch!

If one has the patience and time I highly recommend making
your own shekere. It's not difficult.

The satisfaction playing or having others play an instrument you made yourself
is tremendous. Of course there is nothing wrong with playing one bought or made
for you. It's all good.

Fantastic photos! It seems the LP shekere is used a lot. I had one and really didn't like the sound and weight.

I would love to make my own. It would look just the way I like - the only downside is it may not have the exact sound I want.
After making a few I'm sure one would know all of the gourd, bead, string and formation characteristics that would equal the sound they prefer.

The picture's got the three big ones, which I rarely use.. I use them mostly like batters warming up with the weights on their bats before going to the plate.
The one in the video clip is the smallest, and easiest to play. It was made by my friend Marshall.

I've been getting into making shekeres lately...(or trying to is the better phrase). I always get stumped on what type of knot to use. I've been using the square knot(aka reef knot) for those who have made shekere's before, what knot do you use?

I've never seen the square knot used before for a shekere, I use a knot
where you tie both the strings at the same time around each other, I can't
find the name of the knot though...I think it might be a loop knot.

I've actually been cleaning out some gourds the last few days, got 5 going right
now....

I got 3, here are two of them . The one on the left I bought from Patato (El Pequeño Gigante De Los Cueros) when he lived here in Miami.
