Accompanying solos - How to?

How do you accompany a solo of a conga or bongó player? Clave, cáscara, bell? And what do you like them to do if you take a solo? Does it depend on the style of the song part?

There I go over it and how is generally done. (There are some "etiquettes" to follow depeding in the instrument that is doing the solo).

As the old saying goes; "When in doubt...vamp."

Play it straight. You don't want to walk on top of the other instrument, and vice versa.

Actually the saying is "when in doubt-lay out!". . .but just "play time". . .afinque all the way. . . .Johnny Conga. . .

if it's a loud descarga style section, I'd say stay on the mambo pattern on the mambo cowbell, alternating palm and open tones on the low timbale (la hembra). If the soloist really wants more, then you can open up a do more funkified songo or timba style additions.

However, if the soloist wants more structure, you could always go back down to cascara and clave block combination patterns.
