Georgie Miranda Solid Shell Bongo.

Postby Drum_Addict » Mon Sep 29, 2014 1:03 am

This is the latest creation of Master Artisan Jorge Miranda from Ponce Puerto Rico, Made of Puertorrican Mahogany (Caoba). I had a set of old hardware on a box that looked really bad and decided to give him a call so he can make me a bongo of my own specs based on my love for the valje bongo. He polished the hardware (so good that I doubt they were mine) and mounted some nice skins on them. I was receiving pics of the progress all the way from the original tree log to the final product. There's a variety of options for the wood he also have some claves and cowbell sticks. If you're interested give him a call (939)358-1251.

Here we go. Another beautiful master creation by Jorge. Made by a Bongocero for Bongoceros. I used the one he made for me on Conjunto Akangana last recording. Hurrah for Georgy. Post some pictures of the inside.

Very nice! The shells look thin, so it is a lightweight bongó I reckon?

No, by zooming on the pic the shells are covered by the bottom hoop which in this case is cast aluminum. That is what's making the shells look thin but they are not.

Amazing bongos, gentlemen, you are indeed very fortunate
to own Jorge Miranda bongos. Solid real mahogany bongos, I
do think it gets any better than that.

I guess you do NOT think it gets any better?

In that case you are almost right - I would
justlike to mention my sweet Raúl cedar bongó

Cedar is nice but is not mahogany. There have to be a reason why genuine mahogany
is perhaps the most celebrated and revered cabinet and furniture wood in the world,
and really really hard to come by. One piece solid wood, genuine mahogany bongos made
by an artisan to your specifications. It does not get any better than that, Mike.

Wait a minute, I use to have a Cedar made bongó. Was about 3/4" thick cylindrical shape and made by Cvs. Had beautiful sound but as always have to sell it to a friend who fell in love with it and insisted so much.

I just wanted to share a picture I took today of a bongo Georgie made for me around 12 yrs ago, this is made of flor morada, which I believe is a type of oak. I also have a cedar bongo he made for me around that time, when we used to be bandmates and used to hang around, those were good times...Saludos!!
