50th Anniversary LP bongos Los Originales

Below a photo, reminds me of my Matthew Smith set but mine has a 9" Hembra. Peace.

Got mine...ordered a couple.weeks back and it came in the mail yesterday. Beautiful wood and great hardware, just keep in mind that the heads arent that great and should be changed and since theyre a bit smaller than standard (6 3/4 & 8 1/4) you have to tuck yourself. Dont know yet if the smaller S-sized Remo heads will fit... It came with a signed certificate from Mr Martin Cohen himself, kinda cool

I like it! Will have to try it. I really like the mahogany and the small size.

But we have seen some very early LPs here - including some Mayfield models that Martin is supposed to have made in his garage. They don't look anything like this one - not the shells and not the hardware. There is an old post here somewhere of Mongo playing a bongo that someone claimed to be the first LP that did have a similar shell design.

According to LP founder, Mr. Martin Cohen the mahogany bongos
at the bottom was the first one he made in the Bronx, NY. That
bongo even predates Maywood, NJ bongos. In my opinion that
bongo was greatly influenced by Vergara bongos. The other
bongo you can see that Martin was moving in different direction
already with the design.

Sorry for the delay, the wood is mahogany, in staves not one piece. Must say I'm pretty impressed with the craftsmanship with the wood and hardware...just be warned the skins are the run of the mill LP buffalo skins and should be upgraded. I already mounted a thick skin on the hembra and will be mounting a new skin on the macho.

Maelo: What's the actual price of this piece and do you recommend any place in particular to buy it from?

I'm buying one for my collection. With those smaller sizes and good skins, the sound must be high pitch! Bythe way, Remo does have a 6.75 Macho skin that I already used in my Gon Bops. It could fit yours.

I received mine three weeks ago from Rupps Drums. After carefull examination, I seriously doubt if is indeed mahogany. The craftsmanship seems toooo good that I couldn't see any staves at all. It reminds me of the old LP foam or resin bongo that I had. If this is the case, isn't this false advertising on LP's part. So guys, check your bongos real good. I may be wrong, but this is just how I feel.

Its wood and they are staves, its a bit more notable from.the inside. Also if you seperate the drums you can tell by the holes where the bolts hold the center block that it is wood, dark colored. I already took mine apart and replaced both skins, tucked them today
By the way Remo heads didnt fit- took the rims to try them out and neither R or S series fit properly.

This is a 1964 LP with a sticker from Maywood, NJ. I got this bongo' from Juan Mendez, who played for Johnny Pacheco in the 60's. I had it for over 20 yrs., very light weight and fantastic projection.

On the one hand, they look really sweet, and well-constructed as it is always
the case with LP bongos.
Still, my mahogany set from Palisades Park times is different
and I cannot say I sense the urge of buying the undoubtedly brilliant
reproduction of the earlier model .

The problem is that the wood they are using on them new LP bongos is not the
bonafide mahogany of years ago. Now days they have come-up with all these
substitutes to real deal mahogany that are called some sort of mahogany. Gon
Bops was one of the first companies to find a cheap substitute (Luan) and called
it Philippines mahogany or something, same thing when they started making congas
out of rubber wood and called it " tai oak" a little deceptive if you ask me. Real
mahogany from the Caribbean is off the menu and a protected species. As
advertised, them bongos are replicas of the genuine item.

Some times what exotic wood species is a bongo made out is just so over-rated
as long as you have a professional set in good working condition is all about the

I would guess there is not much difference in sound to other, more authentic or rather older bongos.

I prefer the "real deal" regarding authentic wood types and their looks though.

That said I could kick myself in the @$$ (autocastigarse?) that I sold my LP zebra bongó a while ago
