bongo skin thickness

Postby Mario2CP » Fri Oct 18, 2013 2:12 pm

Hi,
just bought LP Matador bongos and will need to replace skins on both Macho and Hembra.

My dealer offers a cowhide skin of different thicknesses.

What thickness would you recommend me please for Macho and what for Hembra, please?

Thank you

1/8" for the Hembra & 1/16" Macho, you can also use Remo tucked Skindeep for the Macho.

My #2 to JoseanĀ“s suggestion.

Hembra = good cow skin on the thick side

Macho = really thin cow or mule, but synthetic seems to be a good option too.

Thank you for answer! one more thing if i may.

I noticed with my conga head skin that it's thickness almost doubled after soaking and drying.
It really went from 3 to 6mm.

I take 1/8'' and 1/16'' is the final thickness desired, am I correct?

Thank you for your answer in advance.

Yes, it is the desired thickness after the skin have dry. An old conga skin would be an excellent choice for the Hembra.
