Bongo recordings - Bongo: book, cd, dvd, any?

Forum fully dedicated to the instrument

Greetings from a new member from Finland...

Do you have suggestion about bongo recordings: books, CDs, DVDs? ... probably something where other instruments do not disturb this beloved instrument so much :)

Anthony Carrillo did one that although it was a rumba type album, it had the bongo as the main instrument and even a song with the bongo all by itself...Very doubtful it is around since it was an independent production...(You might want to check the name Anthony Carillo in some web browsers to see if anybody has that record...it was in the 90s).

Saludos!

i think you can find the album by Anthony Carillo, "Mis Raices" on amazon, although i don't think they are selling it for cheap...
its all about what you want to learn, Papa Kila, played with Arsenio and if you check out his cd montuneando and a couple of others you can catch him in action, also Ramoncito Castro, who played with Casino de la Playa is good to listen too. a good thing to did is to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals, and these are the guys to listen to, also, Yeyito Iglesias, who played on the most famous Cachao descargas is no yoke, Manny Oquendo is good to listen to, and you can hear him on various Eddie Palmieri recordings, and you can hear him clearly...
the best thing to do is to note the players you want to learn from, and start looking at liner notes on albums, and see whose playing where...
this is what many aspiring rumberos did, was listen to old recordings by Mongo, and Los Munequitos, and Patato Y Totico, Alberto Zayas etc...and now their listening to Yoruba Andabo, Clave y Guaguanco, Rumberos de Cuba, etc....
same for bongo, if you listen to the older cats, and how they layed it downed, you can understand what players today are doing like Anthony Carillo, Tony Cruz, Roberto Quintero etc....

I just ordered Anthony Carillo's Mis Raices and Eddie Palmieri's Listen here.

It may be a surprise to people below arctic, but I have never heart about Anthony, nor Eddie before. Thanks, you bongo people.

If I may give a suggestion about latin music to people around here in europa... see: http://www.prodland.de/?produc....product

Arpa,

Take a visit to the attached link and check out the track examples by Pedro Mena, Joaquín Solarzano, then Armando Peraza with Kuvabana. On those listening samples you can hear the bongó in more traditional settings, so you can become familiar with some of it's basic patterns, common "repiques", and get a better understanding of the bongosero role in an ensemble. After that, then move on to more contemporary stuff.

Greatest Bongó Solos

Hope this helps!

Saludos,

Jorge Ginorio

Just found this link at the Italian version of the forum, great examples: http://www.bongomania.com/group.html
I would find it particularly helpful to get a recording with notation of the rhythms used or repetion of them without other instruments.

I actually have a mint copy Of Perez Prado's "Concierto en Bongo"... I will give it a listen and see if i can recognize the player. I do know that Mongo was with Perez Prado and it might be him . But I'll take a listen and tell u what I think....if you want to hear some great "repiques" pick up any Ray Baretto album with Tony Fuentes, to me one of the BEST on bongo and very underated/....he is the mystery bongo player on the ol Joe Cuba albums....."JC" Johnny Conga..... :D

the man to listen to is Papa Kila, Antonio Suarez (i believe), if you pick up "Montuneando" by Arsenio, than you'll hear some good bongo and campana work, by one of the innovators...

Alafia Abures!
¡Que Nsambi los acutare pa’ siempre!
¡Que Papa Dios los tenga muy bien cuidaitos a to’itos ustedes!

If it's current DVDs your looking for with some excellent bongó riffs and the like! A couple of months ago, I was given a DVD from LP titled "Drum Solos Revisited", excellent DVD by the way. On it there are 15 of New Yorks hottest session and club percussionists (direct quote from DVD itself). I can tell you though, you won't be dissappointed with it! The solos are slammin' and the players include talents such as "Pedrito" Martinez, Samuel Torres, Eddie Montalvo, Jimmy Delgado, Eric Velez, and Ralph Irizarry to name a few!

Really a cool DVD, it actually includes a section in the end that allows you to solo to a couple of the numbers.

Suave!

Hi, all!

After listening to some high quality recordings, I have to say that audio quality of bongo CDs is not that superb... I think Chesky makes good quality CDs and even have some latin jazz and afro-cuban music, but their provision is a bit short still... do you know any other publishers..?

... and yes... good music is better than bad music even when badly produced... so... I am not trying to be a critic or audiophile here, but I am about to get new speakers and I would like to get some quality conga recordings to check beforehand how they sound on different speakers...
